Университет в Кении ответил абсурдным «шестимесячным» твитом, вызвавшим ассоциации с обещаниями президента Руту

NAIROBI, Kenya — St Paul’s University has set social media buzzing after posting a cheeky response that many Kenyans are likely to interpret as a jab at President William Ruto’s often-criticised timelines and promises. The university was responding to an X user who simply wanted to know how long it takes to complete a certificate programme at the institution. “Hello @SPUKenya, how long does it take to finish a certificate program at your university??” the user asked. Instead of giving the conventional academic answer, the university’s verified account responded: “By the next 6 months, In 6 months, before the end of 6 months, after 6 months.” The response immediately reads like political satire rather than an ordinary university customer-service reply. University Joins Kenya’s Political Meme Culture? The phrase “six months” has increasingly become part of Kenyan online political humour, where government timelines and promises are routinely turned into memes by citizens frustrated with repeated assurances about when projects, reforms or economic interventions will bear fruit. While St Paul’s University did not mention President Ruto by name in the post, the wording appears deliberately crafted around that familiar political joke. That distinction matters: there is nothing in the attached post itself establishing that the university was formally attacking the President or his administration. But the choice of language has given the post an unmistakably political flavour and opened the door for Kenyans to interpret it as satire directed at the government. From Universities to Brands: Is Political Banter Going Mainstream? What makes the post particularly striking is the institution behind it. Universities and other established institutions traditionally maintain carefully controlled corporate communication, especially when dealing with politically sensitive issues. A verified university account embracing the kind of humour normally associated with Kenya’s combative X community therefore stands out. The post had already attracted significant engagement in the screenshot, including thousands of reposts and likes and more than 165,000 views. It suggests that Kenyan institutions increasingly understand that witty, culturally relevant social-media responses can travel much further than carefully scripted corporate statements. Is This a Sign of Growing Public Fatigue? It would be an exaggeration to declare the “end of the Ruto regime” from a single humorous university post. But the incident provides an interesting snapshot of how political language moves from speeches into popular culture. When presidential phrases become punchlines used to answer completely unrelated questions, they can indicate that the political message has acquired a life of its own. For President Ruto's administration, the bigger communications challenge may therefore be less about individual jokes and more about whether repeated timelines and promises are increasingly being received with scepticism. For St Paul’s University, meanwhile, somebody running the X account appears to have understood the assignment. A student asked when a certificate would be completed. The university answered: six months, before six months, in six months — and apparently after six months too. Kenyan X did the rest.
