Special library collection highlights Toledo-native Gloria Steinem’s legacy TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - A memorial to Gloria Steinem found a permanent home at the Toledo Lucas County Library. Gloria Steinem helped write a new chapter for women. It seemed only fitting that the Toledo native would be honored with a space where people can read about the movements she spent her life advocating for. The Steinem Sisters Collection The Steinem Sisters Collection was first created as a lending library at a feminist bookstore, People Called Women. When the store closed, the collection was moved in 2018 to the Main Library in downtown Toledo. Nancy Eames is a founding member of the Steinem Sisters and now serves on the advisory board for the Steinem Sisters Collection. Eames said the collection has grown to nearly 1,500 titles including Steinem’s own writing, a play about her life, and her publication Ms. Magazine. The collection contains work from a variety of authors across topics central to feminism and equality. “Books about the first and second wave of feminism, books about feminism today, but we also have a growing collection of fiction about the experience of women’s lives and you’ll find something on just about every topic related to women in this collection,” Eames said. The movements Steinem fought for Steinem spent her life fighting not only for women’s rights, but for equality for all people, and her work is still studied to this day. Sharon Barnes is an associate professor of Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Toledo. Barnes said Steinem fought for equality for all regardless of race, class, sexuality, gender identity, or ability. “I’ve heard her in interviews say that she wanted to be remembered as someone who worked to create a fair world, more fair than she came in, and I think she did that,” Barnes said. Beyond a special library collection The Steinem Sisters Collection seeks to not only connect people through literature, but the Steinem Sisters also host programs including book clubs, talking circles, and special events to celebrate Steinem’s birthday. Eames said the group will likely organize something to celebrate Steinem’s 92 years on this earth. Even though the Steinem Sisters Collection is based in the Main Library, books can be borrowed and sent to any branch. For more information about the collection and programs, click here.
