Художник Билл Филпотт выпустил мемуары о вере, борьбе с шизофренией и любви

Swift Current artist Bill Philpott is sharing the story of his life, career, and Christian faith in a newly released book. Oh Winnie! You’re Mad? Madly in Love with Me! The Life and Christian Testimony of Bill Philpott the Artist is now available on Amazon. A story years in the making Philpott said the book was originally written in 2017, but feedback from others prompted him to revisit and edit the work before releasing it to a wider audience. The book had previously circulated in his local community, but Philpott said he wanted to give the story a broader reach. “I wanted to take this book to a further public exposure,” he said. “I wanted to make it more of an international thing.” Philpott said he eventually had the opportunity to work with a publisher, who approved the book for publication. “It’s live on Amazon right now,” he said. From art to mental health struggles The book chronicles Philpott’s family background, his career as an artist and the challenges he faced with mental illness. Philpott grew up in Saskatchewan and said his father, Edgar Philpott, was a successful purebred cattleman from Central Butte. He discovered his talent for art at a young age and later attended Medicine Hat College, where he earned a diploma in visual communications. After college, Philpott began producing artwork and soon earned a provincial title with the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils (OSAC) for a group of paintings. He toured the province with OSAC as a provincial winner, showcasing the first 10 paintings he had completed after leaving college. His career later took him to Regina, where he worked with the Government of Saskatchewan producing design work for Agriculture Canada and Saskatchewan Agriculture. Philpott said his life changed dramatically when he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. “My life collapsed, and I ended up on welfare and living in a group home in Moose Jaw,” he said. His journey with schizophrenia continued for years, including another hospitalization in 2008, when he was also diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The couple had a son and later purchased Jack’s Signs in Swift Current from Jack Peters, also known as Brother John of Nightwatch Gospel Radio. The business operated for two years before failing, and Philpott eventually returned to Central Butte. Years later, Philpott met Regina resident Winnie Yu, who became his second wife. He describes their relationship and their Christian faith as central parts of his life. After meeting and marrying Winnie, Philpott began working in a support relationship with the Art Gallery of Swift Current. He said the next 10 years were a particularly successful period in his art career, including another provincial OSAC title, a provincial tour and other awards. Philpott also held a major solo exhibition at the Art Gallery of Swift Current. He said his book ultimately tells the story of overcoming schizophrenia, finding love and reconnecting with his artistic career. Near the end of the book, Philpott references First Corinthians Chapter 13, which focuses on love. “You can have all the success in the world, but if you don’t have love, you don’t have much going on,” he said. A message of faith Philpott hopes readers come away from the book with a message of hope and faith. “The gift of God and this bittersweet journey of life and how even though sometimes it’s hard and sometimes it falls apart and we crash and burn, ultimately God is there to help us overcome,” he said. Philpott said his Christian faith plays a major role in the book and was an important part of helping him through difficult periods in his life. “It helped me get through those hard times,” he said. More books in the works Philpott’s artwork can be viewed through the Bill Philpott Arts Facebook group, as well as permanent collections at the Art Gallery of Swift Current, the Saskatchewan Arts Board and the University of Regina. He is also already working on his next literary projects. Philpott said he has written two additional books featuring paintings accompanied by short stories explaining the artwork and the stories behind them. Each book contains 20 paintings and accompanying stories, and he expects the books to be published in the future. For now, Philpott is encouraging people interested in his story to search for Oh Winnie! You’re Mad? Madly in Love with Me! The Life and Christian Testimony of Bill Philpott the Artist on Amazon.
