Southern Manatee Benevolent Fund continues mission of helping firefighters in need BRADENTON, Fla. (WWSB) - The Southern Manatee Benevolent Fund is preparing for its annual golf tournament, bringing firefighters, their families and community members together to raise money for those in need. This year’s tournament is set for Aug. 21 at Bradenton Country Club. The tri-county, three-way tournament is already sold out, but organizers say there are other ways for the community to get involved. The Southern Manatee Benevolent Fund raises money to support firefighters and their families during times of crisis. The organization also provides assistance to people in the community following emergencies, including house fires and other hardships. Southern Manatee Fire & Rescue firefighter Sean Lucas said the fund has also helped firefighters battling cancer and recently assisted a firefighter recovering from a heart attack in Sarasota. “We lost a firefighter at the beginning of this year, and because of the funds raised here, we are going to be able to fully fund a scholarship in his honor to send someone to school,” Lucas said. Lucas said members of the department contribute a portion of their paychecks to the fund, while community fundraisers provide additional support. The organization also plans to host pickleball and cornhole tournaments that are open to the public. Lucas said the events are about more than fundraising. They also give firefighters and community members an opportunity to come together. “The brotherhood and sisterhood of the fire department is incredibly unique,” Lucas said. “Being able to come together in times of tragedy is why this is the best job in the world. We aren’t just here to help one another; we are here to help the community. It is a true honor to be a part of it.” While the Aug. 21 golf tournament is sold out, Lucas said other tournaments still have openings. One is scheduled for Sept. 19, while another is planned for Nov. 28 at Lemons Key. Community members can participate in those events or make a donation through the Manatee County Chiefs’ Cup website.
