South Bristol children create short film calling for action on river pollution The short film sees them team up with some friendly animals to help find a missing water vole A group of South Bristol children have created a short film calling for action on pollution in local rivers. The film follows a few friends on their journey from the Dundry Slopes, along the Pigeonhouse Stream, and out to the Avon and Severn Beach, meeting animals on the way. Rivers — A Race Against Time was made by Room 13 Hareclive, which is co-run by children in Hartcliffe, along with artists from the University of Bristol. The friends find a “mysterious little poster” on the Dundry Slopes about a missing water vole who they then search for. They meet a local mole, whose best friend is the water vole. The mole joins the adventurers on their quest “full of hope”, as they follow the stream through Hartcliffe and then Crox Bottom. A toad and otter also join the group, warning of “dangers all around” such as pollution in the river. The toad says: “If you look closely at the water, you’ll see life: tiny and small creatures and algae. Algae are food for small creatures, which are food for fish and larger animals. They also help keep water clean. “You humans can help make sure nothing nasty gets into the water and destroys tiny and small life. If they go, everything goes. We need healthier water, and so do you.” The otter then leads the group to the city centre and the River Avon, which is “like a chocolate river” due to its brown colour. The animals remark about living in wild spaces and spotting wildlife like damselflies, cormorants, herons and kingfishers. The otter adds: “We need you humans to take care of it all. You are part of the solution.” After getting advice from the river spirit, the crew then head downstream towards Severn Beach, where the Avon meets the Severn Estuary, “a long way from Hartcliffe”. Suddenly the mole is reunited with his friend the water vole, and the film ends with a question for grown ups. One of the children says: “But we can sort it out, can’t we? We found Water Vole, we can make things better, and all the grown ups will help, won’t they?” The film is part of Wild Spaces, a public art commission that took place alongside the construction of the university’s new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus, due to open in September. As well as the film, the project included a poster campaign, community screenings, and an urgent call to action “to everyone to care for our rivers”.
