South Boston Elementary School kicks off school year with focus on kindness HALIFAX COUNTY, Va. (WSET) — South Boston Elementary School is setting the tone for the new school year with a focus on kindness. About 700 students returned to the Halifax County school Wednesday for their official first day back, where Principal Susie Milam and staff worked to make students feel welcomed and appreciated from the moment they arrived. Teachers and staff prepared personalized notes, postcards and other tokens for students. The school also transformed its sidewalks with colorful chalk messages ahead of the first day. “Everybody has been working on personalized notes for their kids, mailing postcards,” Milam said. “Our teachers and staff chalked our walk yesterday, so our kids had some bright little memos to come into this morning.” SEE ALSO: Meadowview Elementary focuses on positive growth with new school-year initiative The kindness extended beyond the elementary school as students from Halifax County High School joined staff to welcome younger students as part of the initiative. For Milam, the goal is for the “Cultivating Kindness” theme to become more than a first-day welcome. The initiative is designed to encourage students to carry that spirit of kindness with them throughout the school year, creating a positive culture across the district.
