Южноафриканский колледж заключил соглашение с университетом в Гренаде для подготовки врачей

NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 26 – South African students are being offered another route into medical school abroad as competition for limited university places intensifies, a development that could offer lessons for Kenya as demand for medical training continues to grow. St. George’s University (SGU) School of Medicine in Grenada has entered into an academic affiliation with Hilton College in South Africa, creating an admissions pathway for eligible students seeking to pursue medicine outside the country. The arrangement allows qualifying Hilton College students to apply for SGU’s five-year Doctor of Medicine programme, with studies available in Grenada or through Northumbria University in the United Kingdom. The move comes as South Africa faces a shortage of medical school places relative to demand. The country has 10 medical schools, making admission highly competitive. Kenya faces a similar challenge, with universities receiving large numbers of applicants for medical courses while training capacity, clinical infrastructure and internship opportunities remain important constraints. The overseas pathway also highlights a route that Kenyan students have increasingly explored, particularly where competition for medical school admission and the cost of private training make alternative options attractive. However, for Kenyan students considering foreign medical schools, recognition by local regulators remains a key consideration. Graduates who intend to return and practice in Kenya must meet the requirements of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC), including applicable assessment, internship and registration requirements. “Hilton College has a longstanding reputation for academic excellence and developing students who are prepared to succeed in globally competitive environments. Through this affiliation, we are creating new opportunities for aspiring physicians in South Africa by providing access to international medical education pathways, scholarship opportunities, and dedicated guidance as they prepare for careers in medicine,” said Lily Phommarack, Associate Director of International Academic Affiliations at SGU. “We look forward to working closely with Hilton College to help support the next generation of healthcare professionals.” SGU students undertake clinical training through a network of more than 75 affiliated hospitals and health Centres in the United States and United Kingdom. For Kenyan families, the cost of overseas tuition, accommodation and living expenses would also have to be weighed against local training options, alongside the recognition of the institution and prospects for professional registration after graduation. “This affiliation strengthens the support available to students interested in pursuing medical careers internationally. At Hilton College, we are committed to ensuring that students have access to high,” said James Webb, Head of Futures at Hilton College. The development underscores a wider challenge facing African education systems: growing demand for doctors is increasing pressure on universities to expand medical training capacity, while students increasingly look beyond their borders for opportunities.
