SOOKE HISTORY: Family’s roots trace back to Malahat Farm Published 9:09 am Wednesday, August 12, 2026 Possibly there are fewer folks visiting from south of the border these days, but we had a delightful visit from a couple here from Ohio — a couple who had come back to the roots of their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents, long ago days at Malahat Farm. Marta Aker came with her husband Greg for a 47-year-long-awaited visit with relatives and to resume their ties to the beautiful farmsite where their grandfather Herbert Anderson had grown up. Herbert was the son of William H. Anderson, whose famous woodworking skills had wrought the fine home of Malahat Farmhouse out of the remote pioneer woods he had brought his family to settle, way back in 1896. Anderson’s son Herbert raised two daughters, Marion and Audrey, and as life turned out, both of these women eventually made their homes in the U.S.A., but always kept in touch with Sooke and its history. Audrey became Mrs. Humphreys and lived in Ohio, while Marion became Mrs. Waldman and made her home in California. When Audrey’s daughter Marta arrived last week, it was a wonderful opportunity for her cousins here in Sooke to catch up and enjoy the photograph albums she brought. Centred in this family photo is Evelyn Stolth, who is also a granddaughter of William H. Anderson, and daughter to Margaret Anderson and her husband Percy Clark. Evelyn, grown up and married to Victor Eve, with three youngsters, had the misfortune of losing her husband in a fishtraps accident. Young bachelor about town, Elmer “Smoky” Stolth, courted the young mother and became father to the Eve kids plus four Stolth youngsters, all of them connected to Malahat Farm. When Ohio’s Marta Aker brought her mother’s photos last week to show relatives, this was one of the notable ones, showing her cousins celebrating Evelyn’s 80th birthday at her Sooke River Road home. Left to right, Wayne Stolth, Elmer Stolth, Gordie Eve, Mike Stolth, birthday girl Evelyn, Karen Stolth (now Brooks), Janice Stolth (now Moseley), Elinor Eve (now McClimon) and Leslie Eve. Truly a pioneer family in all its directions – and it’s a delight to know that on this visit the Akers were hosted by another Anderson descendant, Laurie Szadkowski, who, like her tea party gathering of next generation descendants, was thrilled to get to know them. Elida Peers is the historian with Sooke Region Museum.
