SOHS acquires historic Medford Mail Tribune archives MEDFORD, Ore. – The Southern Oregon Historical Society announced today it has acquired the extensive archives of the Medford Mail Tribune. After the newspaper closed in 2023, the archives remained in storage until Sinclair Broadcasting and KTVL notified the society that they had three days to remove the collection from the former newspaper’s building. A team of seven people worked starting last Thursday to successfully retrieve the numerous boxes and file cabinets. The massive collection features 11 large file cabinets, 77 archival boxes of newspapers, books, photographs, and negatives, alongside a complete microfilm collection spanning from 1906 through 2001, two years before the paper started. The Mail Tribune, which operated for 114 years, famously won the 1934 Pulitzer Prize for Meritorious Public Service for exposing corruption among Jackson County officials. “To have an archive like this from a newspaper that was around for over a century is really exciting, because it’s such a glimpse into our history,” said Will Brake, executive director of the Southern Oregon Historical Society. Along with many of the photos and printed materials was a chair made completely out of newspapers. SOHS, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary, plans to make the organized microfilm accessible to the public within a month. However, Brake said that the society is asking for patience as sorting through the remaining items will be a phased, long-term project. “The vast amount of this collection is not digitized, so it will be quite some time to go through thousands of photos and thousands of negatives to make sure that we get those organized properly,” Brake said. © 2026 KOBI-TV NBC5.
