Portland-based SMRT Architects & Engineers said the acquisition of Portsmouth, N.H., engineering firm Petersen Engineering Inc. strengthens SMRT’s presence in the Boston and Portsmouth markets.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Petersen has 11 employees. With the acquisition, SMRT now has a headcount of 133.
High-performance design
Established in 1884, SMRT is led by Brad Hodges. The architecture and engineering firm has offices in Portland and Bangor, as well as Andover, Mass., and Schenectady, N.Y. Its clients are in health care, education, workplace, advanced manufacturing, life sciences, government, and civic and housing sectors.
Founded in 1992, Petersen Engineering is led by James Petersen. It provides engineering expertise for mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection services. It has specialized depth in energy modeling, load reduction and decarbonization, with a portfolio of over 65 multifamily passive house projects for multifamily, affordable housing and institutional buildings throughout the Northeast. The firm has a significant presence in Boston.
Expanded reach
The acquisition integrates Petersen Engineering’s passive house and high-performance design expertise into SMRT’s multidisciplinary platform, expanding the firm’s reach across the multifamily, affordable housing and institutional sectors.
“James Petersen and his team have spent 30 years building exactly the kind of practice we have been working to develop,” said Hodges. “Deep passive house expertise, a focus on affordable housing and a commitment to high-performance design as a standard, not an add-on. That alignment is rare, and it is why this acquisition makes sense for both firms.”
Petersen will join SMRT as director of engineering. The firm will go by the name Petersen Engineering, an SMRT Company, during the integration period.
“Joining SMRT gives our team the scale and resources to grow well beyond what we could do on our own,” said Petersen.
