Coal Lorry Cleaner Turns to Books, Winning Smile Makes Him a Star Class IV dropout overcomes poverty to pass Class X through Open School system Bhupalapally: The video of a coal-lorry cleaner, Arun Kumar, laughing over a cup of tea has made him an overnight internet celebrity, while drawing attention to his journey from poverty and school dropout to completing his Class X education. Arun, a resident of Korlakunta village in Mahamutharam mandal of Jayashankar Bhupalapally district, dropped out of school from Class IV at the age of 10 because of poverty. He later took up work as a cleaner of a coal-transporting lorry. His life changed unexpectedly at a coal-loading point. After finishing work, Arun took a bath, changed into fresh clothes and was having tea when his brother-in-law and lorry driver Nehru cracked a joke. Arun laughed and moved the steaming paper cup away, apparently to prevent the tea from spilling on his freshly changed clothes. Nehru recorded the moment on his mobile phone and uploaded it on social media. Arun’s smile went viral, with his image subsequently appearing in comedy reels and social media posts. However, Arun could not read the comments as he had forgotten all that he learnt till leaving school aged 10 years. This prompted Nehru, who had himself discontinued his education because of poverty, to help Arun return to studies. During their long journeys, he taught Arun in the lorry cabin. The light from the headlights helped him study the books that Nehru bought for him after enrolling Arun into the Open School system. Arun eventually appeared for the Class X examinations and passed. For Arun, the certificate is a bigger achievement than the fame he gained through the viral meme. “I am extremely poor and we do not even have a proper house. If the government supports me, I want to rebuild my family’s life. I have a strong desire to move ahead in life,” Arun told Deccan Chronicle. Nehru said if the civil society extends support, Arun can go much further. His smile made him an internet sensation. His determination helped him rewrite his story.
