Shippio launches AI Document Matching for trade paperwork checks
KEY POINTS
- Shippio launches AI Document Matching on Shippio Platform to cross-check multiple trade documents in each shipment case
- Feature flags matches, mismatches, missing items and review-pending fields across invoices, packing lists, bills of lading and arrival notices
- Service extends Shippio's AI-OCR workflow from document digitization to consistency checks between trade documents
Shippio Inc., a Japanese trade digitalization company, has started offering a new AI-based document-checking function on its Shippio Platform that cross-references multiple trade documents and detects inconsistencies or missing information, the company said on August 12.
The new feature, called "AI Document Matching," compares the contents of multiple documents linked to a shipment case, including invoices, packing lists, bills of lading and arrival notices. Shippio said the function can identify mismatches, omissions and cases requiring further review, reducing the need for staff to manually compare PDFs and spreadsheets line by line.
The system checks consistency at the item level, including quantity, weight, volume, shipping information and shipper and consignee details. Users can also choose which documents to include in the comparison when multiple documents, such as several invoices, are tied to one case.
Results are displayed in a list by item, showing whether entries match, do not match or are missing. Matching status is also organized by shipment case, allowing users to view multiple cases in one list and prioritize those with discrepancies. Before handing documents to customs brokers, users can compare quantity, weight, volume and shipping information, then ask suppliers or international logistics operators to revise or replace documents based on discrepancies detected by the system.
Shippio said the feature was developed to address a long-standing issue in trade operations, where document formats and wording often differ depending on the issuer. That has made manual checks across documents burdensome and raised the risk of oversight and rework.
The new service builds on Shippio's existing AI-OCR functions for reading and digitizing trade documents. Shippio said the latest addition extends that capability from document capture to supporting consistency checks between documents, while strengthening support for verification and decision-making work using structured data.
Founded in June 2016, Shippio develops and operates an international logistics platform. Its cloud-based system offers cargo vessel tracking, quotation and order functions, centralized trade document management, information sharing among parties and chat-based communication.
In Japan's trading and logistics sectors, customs clearance and international shipping typically require multiple forms issued by different parties, such as suppliers, carriers and freight forwarders. Differences in format and terminology have long made cross-checking a manual task for importers and logistics staff.
