Sherman, Denison ISDs receive Texas Instruments Foundation STEM grant Educate Texas funding targets project-based learning, career pathways along Highway 75 corridor SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) - Sherman and Denison independent school districts have received grant funding from the Texas Instruments Foundation through its Educate Texas initiative, bringing new resources for STEM education as the school year begins. Sherman ISD is in its first year with the grant. Denison ISD is now in its second year. Sherman ISD outlines plans for first grant year Sherman ISD officials said the funding will support project-based learning and makerspaces from pre-K through 12th grade, with an emphasis on conceptual math and science. “We are going to be implementing things such as project-based learning, makerspaces from pre-K through 12,” said Abby, a Sherman ISD official. “We are going to be focusing on conceptual math and science. And all of these things are going to be preparing our students for college and career.” Denison ISD reports early results Denison ISD has already seen measurable growth since receiving the grant. Industry-recognized certifications in the district increased from 32 to 274 in two years. The district has also expanded career and technical education courses at its 7th and 8th grade campus, adding culinary arts, construction, and a drones class. “We have added CTE courses at our 7th and 8th grade campus — we’re offering culinary arts, we’re offering construction, and we’re even offering a drones class at that level so that our students can figure out their interests, their passions, and just continue those pathways on into high school,” said Toni, a Denison ISD official. Grant tied to regional job growth Educate Texas said the timing of the funding aligns with workforce changes along the Highway 75 corridor. “Jobs that are coming in this area are going to look different than they did five years ago or 10 years ago,” said Dr. Pruitt of Educate Texas. “So we want to make sure our students are ready to take on the jobs that are available, so that they can also participate in the modern economy and have the life that they want to live.” Both districts plan to use the funding to align student pathways with Grayson College and regional employers.
