July 06, 2026 By Logan Culwell-Block Shawn Hann, director of theatre at Colorado's Denver School of the Arts, has been named this year's Stephen Schwartz Musical Theatre Teacher of the Year. The honor includes a $5,000 cash prize from The ASCAP Foundation and the Educational Theatre Foundation (ETF). Hann has held her role at DSA for 25 years, a tenure that has seen the institution established as a beacon of excellence in Colorado. Hann leads a seven-year curriculum that culminates in student-led productions. Over her tenure, the company has been selected to perform on the International Thespian Festival Main Stage five times, along with multiple mainstage selections at ThesCon and seven trips to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Previous accolades include being named the Alliance for Colorado Theatre's Middle School Educator of the Year, the EdTA National Theatre Educator of the Year, a Juilliard Directing Fellow, and Colorado High School Theatre Educator of the Year, along with receiving the Mayor's Award for Excellence in Arts and Culture in School Arts and a Superior Teacher Thespy Award. "The Stephen Schwartz Musical Theatre Teacher of the Year Award has become a symbol of excellence in musical theatre education, honoring teachers whose dedication inspires students to grow as artists, collaborators, and individuals," says ASCAP Foundation Director Patricia Leonard in a statement. "Shawn Hann exemplifies that excellence, and we are proud to recognize her outstanding impact on her students and school community." "Shawn Hann is exactly the kind of educator this award was made for," adds ETF Interim Executive Vice President Janie Slavens. "She shows up for her students in every possible way—artistically, personally, as a human being. Watching what she's built in the Thespian community, it's clear her impact goes so far beyond the classroom. We are just thrilled to be able to honor her." The award was established in 2020. Theatre educators at the middle and high school levels are eligible for nomination by their administrator, students, peers, or others who know their work. Nominations are evaluated by a panel of EdTA teachers and leaders, industry professionals, and ASCAP representatives on the quality of work in their program, career accomplishments, and their impact outside the school. Hann will be honored during the EdTA Awards for Excellence in Theatre Education at EdTA's Theatre Education Conference, planned for July 22-24.
