Share house living: Pitfalls of renting with groups uncovered
A fed-up couple has resorted to locking up their food after claiming a secretive share-house snacker kept helping herself to their groceries.
From an energy drink to a full jar of Nutella, the pair say their food was disappearing left, right and centre – and now their pantry cupboard is under lock and key, with the fridge next.
The couple, who live with three other housemates, said they were pushed to breaking point after a string of missing items from the kitchen in their shared home.
Between the five residents, there are two fridges and several pantry cupboards, with the couple sharing one cupboard and a smaller fridge between them.
But they allege someone had been quietly raiding their shelves for weeks.
It started with an energy drink, they said, before escalating to six scones, ramen, an entire jar of Nutella and “potentially more things” they hadn’t yet realised were missing.

They also claimed they weren’t the only ones being hit, with two other housemates noticing food had vanished from both the fridge and pantry.
The pair say they eventually linked the disappearing groceries to a 21-year-old housemate, referred to online as Karla, who moved in about three months ago.
In a Reddit post, one of them said the clue that cracked the mystery came after their cat wandered into Karla’s room.
“My cat went into Karla’s room one day and I had to get him out, because I didn’t know what was in there and if there was anything harmful,” they wrote.
“So I took him out but in the process I noticed the empty box of Cobs scones on the ground of her room.”
That discovery prompted a confrontation, but the couple said Karla denied taking anything.
They also claimed they had never seen her buy groceries.
Left with little choice, the pair told the household they were installing locks on their pantry cupboard, and said the decision was backed by the other housemates.
“This is the solution,” they wrote.
“A lock on our pantry cupboard and a lock on its way for the fridge and freezer.”
In a further sign of how far things had escalated, the couple said they had even started numbering items kept outside the cupboard so they could keep track of what they owned.
“It sucks that I have to do this. But in an already poor financial situation, I cannot be wasting money on extra food,” they wrote.
They said the issue wasn’t about refusing to share, but about food being taken without permission.
“If you just ask that would be different. I would be more than willing to feed someone who’s hungry and asked. Not someone who simply takes,” they said.
The couple also warned they would go to their landlord if the locks were tampered with.
“If Karla breaks the lock, I just have more evidence to provide to my landlord. We are a month-by-month lease so it’s somewhat easier to evict a single person,” they wrote.
The post triggered a flood of responses from people who said they had dealt with similarly brazen housemates.
One commenter said they’d been forced to move homemade bread into their bedroom to stop others eating it.
Another said they returned to the kitchen to find almost an entire pizza gone just 20 minutes after taking it out of the oven to cool.
A third said their own housemate had raided a clearly labelled pantry before being caught out when one packet of stolen beef ramen was left sitting on the bench.
Others took aim at the accused housemate, joking the new locks would probably annoy her more than the confrontation itself.
For the couple, though, the message was simple: ask and you might get fed. Take without permission, and don’t be surprised if the padlocks come out.
