Self-Excluded Gambler Gains Casino Entry Using Fake ID, Operator Owns Up to Error September 8, 2026 News Background of the Incident Holland Casino has publicly recognized shortcomings in its security measures after a reporter from PowNed successfully entered its Eindhoven location using a fake driver’s license that belonged to someone else. The casino clarified that the broadcaster misrepresented how the staff conducted the ID verification process, explaining that officials did more than simply check the photograph on the ID. Investigation Findings: The Self-Exclusion Bypass Test Dutch broadcaster PowNed carried out an investigation to test whether individuals who have self-excluded from gambling could circumvent casino entry restrictions by using another person’s identification. The Netherlands Gambling Authority (KSA) responded by stating that it would take action based on the results of this probe, which included Holland Casino’s Eindhoven venue as well as two other gaming halls. The reporter Abel Bijlsma, who is registered with the Netherlands’ central self-exclusion system called Cruks, attempted to enter ten casinos — five with his own ID and five with a colleague’s driver’s license. He managed to gain admission to three of the five casinos when using the colleague’s ID, including Jack’s Casino in Utrecht and Casino Be One in Rotterdam. Holland Casino’s Explanation of the Eindhoven Episode Holland Casino provided additional context regarding the incident at the Eindhoven site, emphasizing that the televised footage did not capture the complete interaction between the reporter and the casino staff. The reporter mentioned that his appearance had changed due to significant weight loss, explaining some difference in likeness. The casino staff reportedly did not rely solely on the ID’s photo but also cross-referenced an older picture of the ID holder stored in their system. This older image resembled the reporter more closely than the driver’s license photo, leading the staff to allow entry, though with some suspicion. While inside, the reporter did not use any casino services and left shortly after. This event triggered an internal review by Holland Casino. Admission of Error and Internal Review After the investigation, Holland Casino admitted that the reporter should not have been allowed entry. Their internal audit concluded that hospitality considerations influenced employees’ decision-making more than was appropriate, which led to incomplete adherence to identity verification protocols. The established procedure mandates refusing admission if there is any doubt about the authenticity of the person presenting the ID. The casino confirmed that staff have since been reminded to strictly follow these rules. The broader regulatory body, KSA, acknowledged the overall success of the monitoring system as it prevented entry using fake IDs at two venues and effectively blocked the reporter when using his own self-exclusion ID. However, the incident where entry was granted underscores the critical role of thorough physical identity checks at Dutch casinos. The Importance of Human Judgment in Identity Checks Holland Casino emphasized the extensive efforts it undertakes to verify identity and regulate access through millions of daily visits, expressing confidence that their procedures generally work well. Nonetheless, they admitted that human judgment plays a vital role in the verification process. The operator views this incident as a learning opportunity to enhance their system, pledging to analyze the event carefully, implement improvements, and continue investing in their verification procedures. Holland Casino also stated a readiness to cooperate fully with the regulator and welcomes any future inquiries from the KSA.
