SDSU to dedicate campus sculpture to SD man credited with saving millions from starvation SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - South Dakota State University will honor a South Dakota man credited with saving more than 25 million people from starvation at an upcoming ceremony. Edgar McFadden (1891-1956) was the breeder of a wheat variety called “Hope”, a rust-resistant wheat variety credited with saving over 25 million people from starvation. “We honor Edgar McFadden and give our campus a lasting way to recognize an SDSU pioneer whose vision changed agriculture worldwide,” said Joe Cassady, SD Corn Endowed Dean of the SDSU College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences. “The sculpture will invite students, faculty, staff and visitors to reflect on how one person’s perseverance and discovery can create an enduring legacy of hope.” Reader’s Digest estimates that Hope saved American farmers $400 million in lost yields. The sculpture will be dedicated before SDSU’s first home football game of the season. The ceremony will start at 3:30 p.m. between the Edgar S. McFadden Biostress Lab building and the Raven Precision Agriculture Center. All are welcome to attend. Copyright 2026 Dakota News Now. All rights reserved.
