Scottsboro attorney celebrates 100th birthday, still practicing law Jack Livingston, father of Alabama Sen. Steve Livingston, has worked in North Alabama courtrooms for more than 75 years SCOTTSBORO, Ala. (WAFF) - Friends, family and colleagues gathered at the Jackson County Courthouse on Friday to celebrate Jack Livingston’s 100th birthday. Livingston is the oldest practicing attorney in Alabama, a World War II veteran and has spent more than 75 years in the legal profession. A career spanning decades Livingston graduated from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1950. Since then, he has served as a prosecutor, circuit judge and attorney in both Jackson and DeKalb counties. He currently works as an insurance attorney at his own firm in Scottsboro. He is also the father of Alabama Sen. Steve Livingston. Two years ago, Livingston celebrated his 98th birthday at the Jackson County Courthouse. At the time, he said he would be proud to make it to the following year. “It’s very nice to be alive,” Livingston said. “I’ve had a good life and the Lord’s been good to me.” No secret to 100 years When asked about the secret to reaching 100, Livingston said there isn’t one. “I don’t have a secret,” he said. “I think it’s just doing what comes along every day.” Livingston said he loves what he does, which makes it easy to get up and do it each day. He added that two years ago he reached a point where he no longer did anything he didn’t want to do — and that remains true. Colleagues reflect on his legacy Fellow attorneys and judges also gathered to mark the occasion. Jackson County Judge John Graham spoke to the depth of Livingston’s legal knowledge. “It has been such a privilege to work alongside him as a lawyer and have him appear in court as a judge as well,” Graham said. “Jack has literally forgotten more stuff than the rest of us have ever known.” Livingston said he was not expecting the turnout. “It’s extraordinarily nice to see these people,” he said. “I am very flattered that they would take time to come and visit with me.” After more than seven decades of practice, Livingston said he plans to retire at the end of this year. He does not yet have plans for what comes next. Click Here to Subscribe on YouTube: Watch the latest WAFF 48 news, sports & weather videos on our YouTube channel! Copyright 2026 WAFF.
