The site analysed the latest comparable Office for National Statistics figures to rank Scotland’s five lowest average monthly rent, comparing area-wide data rather than isolated bargain listings or individual property recommendations. The ranking uses the ONS Price Index of Private Rents published on August 19 2026. Scotland’s figures are July 2026 rental-area averages, ordered from lowest to highest monthly private rent, with annual percentage changes taken from the same release. In first place is Dumfries and Galloway at £554 a month and despite increasing by 6.1 per cent, its still the cheapest area in Scotland. Significantly behind in second place is Ayrshire at £646 a month, up 2.9 per cent ONS. While it may not seem like a huge jump, the £92 monthly gap between Dumfries and Galloway and Ayrshire adds up to £1,104 more over a year. Meanwhile two areas in Scotland, that made it to the top five cheapest areas, have actually decreased in price. These are the Scottish Borders at £707 a month, down 2.5 per cent ONS and Perth and Kinross at £729 a month, down by 1.6 per cent ONS. The highest rent average out of the group is in the Highland and Islands at £733 a month, up 4.5 per cent ONS. Across the full five areas, rent ranges from £179 a month, equal to £2,148 over 12 months before other housing costs. The list spans a large part of Scotland, from Dumfries and Galloway in the south-west to Highland and Islands in the north. However, Scotland's major cities including Edinburgh and Glasgow noticeably do not feature among the cheapest five. Before choosing a location, budget for the deposit, council tax, energy, transport and any service charges alongside the advertised rent. "A household looking at Dumfries and Galloway should compare the cost of getting to work or essential services, while searches across Highland and Islands may need a closer look at transport and the number of suitable homes available. The monthly rent alone does not show the full cost of a move."
