Once the FIFA World Cup games wrapped up in Vancouver, my first question wasn't about attendance figures or economic impact. It was: How long is that giant soccer ball staying up? For a moment, I wondered if it might get the Christmas tree treatment, remaining in place simply because nobody had gotten around to taking it down. As it turns out, there's a reason it's sticking around. Science World has announced that The Beautiful Dome, its transformation into the official FIFA World Cup 2026 official match ball, will remain in place until September 7. The extension coincides with the final day of Soccer & Technology from the FIFA Museum, the feature exhibition currently running inside the building. Keeping the exterior in place for the duration of the exhibition makes sense, especially considering the scale of the installation. Transforming the 40-metre geodesic dome into the tournament's official match ball required 131 custom-made panels, each designed and installed to create a complete 360-degree recreation. “The transformation of Science World's iconic dome into the Trionda™, the FIFA World Cup 2026™Official Match Ball, was no small engineering feat,” shares Rob Hollingsworth, senior director of commercial sales and partnerships at Science World, in a statement. There's no denying the giant ball has made an impression. It became one of the defining images of Vancouver during the tournament, appearing everywhere from international broadcasts to vacation photo dumps. Even people who spent the past month grumbling about crowded SkyTrains and packed downtown sidewalks might have to admit that Science World has been looking particularly sharp. And unlike some World Cup installations that disappeared almost as soon as the final whistle blew in Canada, including the TSN set-up at Jack Poole Plaza, this one has a reason to stick around.
