Why? The NNSA needs more time to sift through bids for a massive new contract valued at $61.5 billion spanning two decades. Savannah River Nuclear Solutions got a one-year bump worth about $2.3 billion. NNSA made the call on Aug. 10. "Exercising SRNS' remaining option period will ensure continuity and stability of the contractor workforce to maintain focus on key NNSA objectives," the agency stated in a press release, per the Aiken Standard. SRNS President and CEO Jeff Griffin told workers the extension clears up where the company stands. "NNSA is under no obligation to utilize the full year, but this will allow time for the M&O rebid process to transpire without disruption to our important missions," Griffin wrote. Griffin thinks a four-month handoff will happen around mid-2027. "We will continue to drive forward with a sense of urgency until the day we relinquish responsibility to another M&O contractor, leaving behind a proud SRNS legacy," he wrote. The new deal builds in transition periods and extension options that could stretch it to 20 years and 4 months max. NNSA said the Request for Proposals zeroes in on finding a contractor who can push delivery of the Savannah River Plutonium Processing Facility forward to fiscal year 2035. That facility will crank out plutonium pits. Pits are the heart of nuclear weapons. The site is being reworked from the abandoned Mixed Oxide Fuel Fabrication Facility, which got axed in 2018 when construction fell behind schedule and costs ballooned.
