Saint Louis Science Center honors legacy of late VP Becky Thompson ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - The Saint Louis Science Center announced the recent death of its vice president of science and education late last month. Dr. Becky Thompson, 47, died on July 31 after going into cardiac arrest while attempting the Catalina Channel swim in California, according to an obituary. The science center honored her legacy in the announcement by highlighting her accomplishments and extraordinary passion for science. “During her time at the Science Center, she brought an extraordinary passion for science, an unwavering commitment to the organization’s mission, and a genuine spirit of care and advocacy for her team members and colleagues, students, educators, guests, and the broader St. Louis community,” the science center said. “Her leadership and belief in the power of science to inspire curiosity and bring people together leave an indelible mark on the Science Center and on the region.” The obituary said Thompson was an acclaimed physicist and leader in science outreach. Before joining the science center in 2024, she served as the head of education and public engagement at the Fermi National Accelerator Lab. Outside of science, Thompson participated in Ironman triathlons before transitioning to open-water swimming, according to the obituary. She was attempting the Catalina Channel swim as part of a goal to achieve the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming. “She saw tremendous possibility in what this institution could do for the people of St. Louis and brought energy, imagination and purpose to that work every day,” said Dr. Ray Vandiver, President and CEO of the Saint Louis Science Center. “More importantly, Becky cared deeply about people and making science accessible, as well as inspiring the next generation and helping those around her succeed. She is profoundly missed, but her impact continues to shape the future of the Science Center.” The center has set up a fund in Thompson’s honor. Donations and gifts toward the fund can be made here.
