Сериал Runaways: мистические силы злодейки Морган ле Фей основаны на реальных научных теориях

Elizabeth Hurley's current viral social media resurgence is a useful occasion to revisit the most scientifically dense role she has ever played: Morgan le Fay, the sorcerous main antagonist of Marvel's Runaways Season 3 on Hulu. The show's final season dropped all 10 episodes on December 13, 2019, and built its primary villain around three signature supernatural powers — astral projection, the ability to enthrall smartphone users through embedded magic, and the capacity to breach dimensional boundaries. Each of those powers turns out to map, with surprising precision, onto a specific empirically studied phenomenon: the neuroscience of out-of-body experiences, the behavioral psychology of dark patterns, and the theoretical physics of extra-dimensional brane-world models. What Runaways called sorcery, three separate scientific disciplines call constructed reality — and the convergence is not accidental. Morgan le Fay Was a Healer Before She Was a Villain The character's 1,500-year literary arc is itself a case study in the demonization of a woman with specialized knowledge. The first sustained literary appearance of "Morgen" occurs in Geoffrey of Monmouth's Vita Merlini, written around 1150 CE, where she is the ruler of Avalon and the leader of nine gifted sisters — a supernatural healer who received the fatally wounded King Arthur after the Battle of Camlann. She is described as extraordinarily skilled, learned, and benevolent, with no malice in this Morgan. Her transformation into a villain unfolded across the following three centuries through Arthurian romances filtered through a Christian clerical lens — writers who found powerful, learned women threatening and whose cultural framework had few legitimate categories for female expertise outside sanctioned domestic roles. By 1485, when Thomas Malory coined the epithet "le Fay" (from the French la fée, "the fairy") in Le Morte d'Arthur, the demonization was essentially complete: Morgan had become a jealous, scheming sorceress whose primary function was threatening Arthur's authority and Guinevere's honor. The name itself preserves the earlier tradition — Old Brythonic roots connecting her to water spirits and sovereignty goddesses — but the medieval Christian overlay buried it. This arc matters for Runaways because the show's worldbuilding makes an implicit argument: what medieval writers called "witchcraft" in a powerful woman was, from the perspective of a more accurate account of that woman's abilities, something closer to a deep command of natural mechanisms that her contemporaries could not categorize. Marvel's Morgan (in her various comics appearances since 1955) is an immortal half-Fae sorceress who studied under Merlin and was eventually imprisoned in the Dark Dimension; the Runaways version places her backstory in the Arthurian period and treats the legends as distorted historical memory. The show's claim is Clarkeian: the abilities called magic in the 6th century look, in the 21st-century fictional universe, indistinguishable from sufficiently advanced science. The three specific powers that Hurley's Morgan exercises in Season 3 demonstrate how that equivalence works in practice. Astral Projection and the Temporoparietal Junction Morgan le Fay's signature ability across Marvel Comics and Runaways alike is astral projection: the capacity to separate consciousness from the physical body and dispatch it into remote spaces, including the Dark Dimension. In the show's fiction, this is an act of mystical will. In neuroscience, what we call "astral projection" is a reproducible phenomenon arising from disruption of a specific brain region — and it has been induced experimentally in a laboratory. The temporoparietal junction (TPJ) is a region located where the temporal and parietal lobes meet, roughly above and behind the ear on both hemispheres. Its primary function is to integrate information from multiple sensory streams — proprioception (the felt sense of body position), vestibular signals (balance), vision, and touch — into a unified, continuously updated model of where "you" are in space relative to your body. In normal waking experience, this integration produces the unambiguous conviction that you are located inside your physical body. What the TPJ is actually doing, neuroscientifically speaking, is running a body-ownership model. It does not track a metaphysical soul; it tracks a constructed representation. The landmark demonstration of what happens when that model is disrupted came in 2002, when neurologist Olaf Blanke at the University of Geneva electrically stimulated the right angular gyrus of a patient undergoing evaluation for epilepsy treatment. The patient consistently reported the classic features of an out-of-body experience: the sensation of floating above her own body, looking down at herself from a location in the air, and perceiving her own limbs from the outside. The experience appeared and disappeared as the current was switched on and off — reliably, reproducibly, and in a controlled clinical setting. There was no mystical component. There was a disrupted body-location model. Subsequent research confirmed and extended this finding. Blanke and colleagues published a 2005 paper in The Journal of Neuroscience demonstrating that TMS targeted at the TPJ specifically impaired healthy volunteers' ability to mentally picture their own body from an outside perspective — the precise cognitive function that an out-of-body experience appears to engage. A case study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2007 documented a patient with implanted electrodes for tinnitus whose tinnitus electrode triggered repeated OBEs, with PET scanning confirming activation of the angular-supramarginal gyrus junction and posterior thalamus. Blanke and Arzy's 2005 synthesis in The Neuroscientist established the theoretical framework for out-of-body experience: OBEs result from a failure to integrate multisensory information at the TPJ, producing illusory self-location, illusory perspective, and illusory body-ownership — the subjective experience of being elsewhere. A 2014 fMRI study at the University of Ottawa examined a participant who could produce what she described as extra-corporeal experiences voluntarily. Brain imaging during these states found activation in the left supramarginal gyrus and posterior superior temporal gyrus — regions that together constitute the TPJ — with simultaneous deactivation of the posterior visual cortex, consistent with the body-location model being decoupled from normal visual input. More recent research suggests that OBE-like states have been reliably induced through controlled visual-vestibular stimulation in laboratory conditions, without direct brain stimulation — strengthening the argument that what the experience requires is not mysticism but specifically a disrupted body-ownership signal. Separate work has proposed that OBEs, sleep paralysis, and lucid dreaming may emerge sequentially from the same wake-sleep transition mechanisms, suggesting these states occupy a spectrum of constructive self-perception rather than categorically separate domains. None of this research supports the claim that consciousness actually travels during an OBE. In controlled conditions, subjects who report floating above the room and perceiving it from outside their bodies do not successfully identify hidden targets placed on elevated platforms — the standard test for "veridical perception" during an OBE. What the neuroscience does support, compellingly, is that the subjective experience is genuine, that the mechanism involves TPJ-mediated body-model failure, and that the "sense of being located inside your body" is not an immutable fact but a continuously computed neural output. It is worth noting that Christof Koch, one of the world's leading neuroscientists and a senior figure at the Allen Institute for Brain Science, argued in presentations at the BIAL Foundation's "Behind and Beyond the Brain" Symposium (April 2026, with a second coverage piece published July 30, 2026) that materialism has not solved consciousness — why physical brain processes are accompanied by subjective experience at all. Koch's July 2026 BIAL lecture elaborated on this position, exploring near-death experiences and terminal lucidity as phenomena that resist strictly materialist explanations. Koch supports Integrated Information Theory (IIT), developed by Giulio Tononi, which proposes that consciousness scales with integrated information — and which has been described as a scientific version of panpsychism, the view that consciousness may be more fundamental to reality than traditional materialism assumes. The question of whether the TPJ disruption that produces OBEs constitutes a narrowing of consciousness, a reframing of it, or something else is one that IIT and the hard problem both leave genuinely open. This is what Morgan le Fay's astral projection literalizes: not the impossible (consciousness traveling without a substrate) but the documented (body-location is a constructed model that can be decoupled from the physical body). Whether Hurley's Morgan has mastered her TPJ or is working at a different architectural level entirely is a question the show does not answer — but the science the power maps onto is the right one. The Corvus WizPhone and the Neuroscience of Dark Patterns In Season 3's fourth episode, "Rite of Thunder," Morgan le Fay executes her most explicitly technology-critical move: she seizes control of Wizard Computers (the show's thinly veiled Silicon Valley stand-in) and engineers the Corvus WizPhone, a smartphone device imbued with Darkhold magic and distributed free of charge. Users who adopt the phone become progressively entranced — unable to disengage from it, fixated on its screen, and aggressively defensive when it is removed. Morgan then harvests the collective "spiritual life force" of thousands of addicted users as a power source for her dimensional ambitions. The allegory is specific enough to constitute editorial commentary. The Corvus phone's mechanism — auditory incantation embedded in the phone's audio stream → attentional capture → compulsive engagement → resource extraction — parallels with near-clinical precision what behavioral researchers have documented about the design of attention-capture platforms. Dark patterns, a term coined by UX designer Harry Brignull in 2010, refer to interface design choices that exploit cognitive biases to drive behavior the user has not consciously chosen. The most consequential dark patterns for sustained platform engagement include: infinite scroll (which eliminates the natural stopping point that a paginated format provides), variable reward mechanics (the slot-machine logic of social media feeds — sometimes a scroll reveals something valuable, which is more compulsive than consistent reward), auto-play video, and notification systems calibrated to create anxiety that is only relieved by re-opening the app. These are not bugs in the system design; they are documented intentional features optimizing for time-on-device. The neurological substrate they exploit is the dopamine reward circuit. Research on smartphone addiction has shown that personalized content recommendation algorithms — which select content based on modeled predictions of what will hold a given user's attention — trigger stronger activity in brain regions associated with reward anticipation than non-personalized content, a finding consistent with the mechanism known from variable-ratio reinforcement schedules in behavioral psychology. A 2026 study at Semmelweis University, published in Acta Psychologica, confirmed that weak self-control and FOMO predict addiction — both of which dark pattern design systematically exploits. A study published in Behavioural Public Policy through Cambridge University Press found all user groups susceptible to manipulation, with only weak evidence that prior knowledge or digital literacy provides meaningful protection. A 2024 analysis published in the European Journal of Risk Regulation argued that "hyper-engaging dark patterns" — defined as addictive interface designs that exploit the dopamine cycle and reduce user autonomy — should be classified as illegal under EU law. Separate legal scholarship has discussed dark patterns as constituting a form of "disloyal design," though that work remains behind a paywall. The Corvus WizPhone's mechanism is a literalization: Morgan's auditory incantation is the attention-capture trigger, the device's compulsive hold is the dopamine loop, the users' defensive aggression when separated from their phones maps onto withdrawal behavior, and the "spiritual life force" Morgan harvests is a transparent metaphor for the commodity that free-to-user attention platforms actually extract: time, behavioral data, and the cognitive bandwidth that users nominally control but surrender in practice. The show's worldbuilding makes this critique available because it treats Morgan's supernatural technology as continuous with the mundane technology of Wizard Computers. She does not introduce magic into a tech company; she reveals that the tech company's existing design practices were already doing something structurally similar, at a lower intensity, without the Darkhold. The Dark Dimension and Brane-World Physics Morgan le Fay's cosmological goal — merging the Dark Dimension with Earth — provides the show's finale with its physics problem. The Dark Dimension, shared with Doctor Strange in the MCU, is depicted as a parallel reality with its own physical laws, accessible through dimensional rifts opened by sufficient mystical energy. It is not a planet. It is not a parallel version of Earth. It is an orthogonally separate reality with different governing conditions. This concept has a theoretical home in physics, specifically in the family of brane-world models arising from string and M-theory. The Randall-Sundrum model, published in 1999 by Lisa Randall and Raman Sundrum, proposes that our observable universe is a three-dimensional membrane ("brane") floating within a higher-dimensional "bulk." In this framework, other branes may exist alongside ours in the bulk, separated by dimensions we cannot directly perceive or traverse. Gravity is the one force that can "leak" between branes in some versions of this framework, which was why the model generated proposals for detecting extra dimensions through gravitational effects at the Large Hadron Collider — proposals that have not yet produced confirmatory evidence, but that remain theoretically live. String theory in its various formulations requires 10 or 11 spatial dimensions to be mathematically consistent. The additional 6 or 7 dimensions are, in most formulations, "compactified" — curled up at the Planck scale (approximately 10⁻³⁵ meters, or about 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000394 inches), which is why they are not directly detectable by any existing instrument. The "landscape" problem in string theory adds a further complication: there may be on the order of 10⁵⁰⁰ possible stable vacuum states, each corresponding to a version of the universe with different physical constants. In this framework, a parallel reality with different laws is not a metaphysical speculation but a specific prediction about what other regions of the landscape would look like if they could be observed. Morgan's ultimate ambition — merging the Dark Dimension with Earth — maps structurally onto what cosmologists have called a vacuum phase transition catastrophe: a hypothetical scenario in which a lower-energy vacuum state nucleates in some region of spacetime and propagates outward at the speed of light, converting the physical laws of our universe to a different regime. The energy scales required for any such transition would be vastly beyond anything in Marvel's magical or technological inventory, but the scenario is a recognized object of study in long-termist cosmological risk literature — one of a small number of genuinely irreversible civilization-ending processes that physics can describe formally. The show's treatment of dimensional travel as a power Morgan has command over is, within the internal logic of the MCU, consistent: if dimension-bridging requires mystical energy of a specific kind, then Morgan's command of that energy is what makes her uniquely dangerous. The physics does not make this impossible. It makes it technically ambitious in a direction that real-world researchers are at least trying to understand. Janet Stein and the Hard Problem of Digital Consciousness A subplot running through Season 3 that receives less cultural attention than Morgan's sorcery is arguably the season's most philosophically significant thread: the Healing Algorithm. Victor Stein, using alien Gibborim technology, creates a virtual reality environment sophisticated enough to sustain his wife Janet's consciousness after her near-death — she lives, subjectively, in a simulated reality while her biological body remains comatose. Stacey Yorkes discovers that Janet's consciousness has survived "in computer programming," treated in the show's logic as an engineering fact with moral weight. This is a dramatization of substrate independence — the philosophical hypothesis that consciousness depends on the functional organization of information processing, not on the specific biological material doing the processing. If substrate independence is true, then a sufficiently detailed functional emulation of a brain's computational activity would produce genuine conscious experience, identical in subjective quality to biological consciousness. This is the theoretical foundation of whole brain emulation proposals in the emerging field of consciousness science. The show leaves the correct philosophical puzzle unresolved: is simulated-Janet the same person as biological-Janet, or a copy? This is the problem philosophers know as the teleportation problem or fission problem in the philosophy of personal identity — if you replicate a mind and the original persists (as it does here, comatose), do you have one person in two substrates, or two distinct persons? There is no consensus answer. The show's ambiguity is not a dramatic oversight; it is the honest position. Christof Koch's advocacy for Integrated Information Theory has bearing here. IIT proposes that consciousness is proportional to the degree of integrated information in a system — formally, a measure called Φ (phi). Under IIT's integrated information framework, a sophisticated computational simulation could in principle have a high Φ, which would make it conscious in a meaningful sense — though what "sufficiently sophisticated" requires is an open question, and IIT has been criticized as potentially unfalsifiable in this domain. The Janet Stein storyline is a narrative exploration of exactly the conditions under which a computation would qualify. Runaways and Clarke's Third Law as Dramatic Worldbuilding Runaways' internal cosmology treats technology, alien biology, and magic as three expression points of a single underlying capacity to manipulate the physical and informational architecture of reality. Victor Stein's alien-derived technology is not separate from Morgan le Fay's sorcery — they are different implementations of a shared phenomenon, differentiated by era and cultural vocabulary. The Darkhold is a sentient information system; a book that contains reality-manipulation code is functionally a library of operational instructions, and the fact that it "corrupts" those who read it maps cleanly onto the computer-science concept of malware: code that modifies the host system in ways the host did not authorize, in service of a third party (in this case, Chthon, the Elder God who created the Darkhold). This pluralistic metaphysics allows the Corvus WizPhone — simultaneously a functioning consumer smartphone and a magical artifact — to exist without narrative contradiction. It also makes an implicit Clarkeian argument: Arthur C. Clarke's third law holds that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Runaways Season 3 reverses the direction: any sufficiently analyzed magic turns out to be technology operating by mechanisms that science can eventually describe. The character Elizabeth Hurley played is, in this reading, not a villain in the simple sense but a practitioner of advanced mechanism. She exploits the TPJ's constructive vulnerability. She weaponizes the dopamine loop. She navigates the brane-world's topology. Her defeat at the season's end — Tina Minoru using the Darkhold's own code to banish her across dimensional boundaries, delivered via Robert Minoru's smart glasses recording of the relevant incantation — is itself an argument about information: the thing that defeated the information system was a better-applied instance of the same system. The full season's episode listing shows just how densely plotted this culminating arc becomes. That Morgan le Fay began her literary life as a healer who was progressively demonized by a culture threatened by her expertise, then reemerged 1,500 years later as a Marvel villain whose powers turn out to be surprisingly scientifically accurate, is the kind of loop that myths make when the science catches up. Frequently Asked Questions Is astral projection really a brain phenomenon that neuroscientists have studied? Yes. The temporoparietal junction (TPJ) is the brain region identified as the anatomical substrate of out-of-body experiences (OBEs). Neurologist Olaf Blanke demonstrated in 2002 that stimulating the right angular gyrus — within the TPJ — reliably induced OBE-like sensations in a patient, with the effect switching on and off with the current. Subsequent research, including transcranial magnetic stimulation studies and a 2007 NEJM case study of a patient whose tinnitus electrodes repeatedly triggered OBEs, confirmed the TPJ's role. Neuroscientists understand OBEs as arising from a failure to integrate multisensory body-location information, producing illusory self-location. What the science does not support is the claim that consciousness actually travels anywhere during these experiences — controlled tests for "veridical perception" during OBEs have not produced confirmatory results. What are dark patterns, and are they really comparable to what the Corvus WizPhone does in Runaways? Dark patterns are interface design choices that exploit cognitive biases to drive compulsive behavior — including infinite scroll, variable reward schedules, auto-play, and notification systems designed to create anxiety. They exploit the dopamine reward circuit in ways that researchers have compared neurologically to substance addiction: the same brain regions are activated, the same withdrawal-like behaviors emerge when access is removed, and the same reduction in salience response to non-device stimuli has been documented in heavy users. The Corvus WizPhone in Runaways literalizes this mechanism — Morgan's embedded auditory incantation maps onto attentional capture; the users' compulsive engagement maps onto the dopamine loop; the "spiritual life force" she harvests is a direct metaphor for the commodity attention platforms extract from their users. Research published in Behavioural Public Policy found strong evidence consumers across all groups are susceptible to dark patterns. The European Journal of Risk Regulation (2024) argued that hyper-engaging dark patterns should be classified as illegal unfair commercial practices under EU law. Could the Janet Stein "Healing Algorithm" scenario — consciousness surviving in a computer — actually happen? This is one of the genuinely open questions in consciousness science. The philosophical hypothesis underlying the storyline is called substrate independence: the idea that consciousness depends on the functional organization of information processing, not on the specific biological material. If true, a sufficiently detailed computational simulation of a brain's processes would produce genuine conscious experience. Christof Koch, a leading neuroscientist at the Allen Institute for Brain Science, supports Integrated Information Theory (IIT), which proposes that consciousness could arise in non-biological substrates — in any system with sufficiently integrated information. The harder question the show dramatizes — whether a simulated mind is the same person as the biological original — is the teleportation/fission problem in philosophy of personal identity, and there is no consensus answer. The show's ambiguity is the philosophically honest position. What is brane-world theory, and does it explain the Dark Dimension in Runaways? Brane-world theory, particularly the Randall-Sundrum model (1999), proposes that our observable universe is a three-dimensional membrane ("brane") within a higher-dimensional bulk space. Other branes may exist alongside ours in the bulk, separated by dimensions we cannot detect or traverse. String and M-theory require 10 or 11 spatial dimensions; the extra dimensions are compactified at the Planck scale in most formulations, making them currently undetectable. The Dark Dimension in Runaways is structurally consistent with a parallel brane: a separate reality with different physical laws, accessible through dimensional rifts opened by sufficient energy. Morgan's goal of merging the Dark Dimension with Earth maps onto a vacuum phase transition catastrophe — a cosmological risk scenario in which a different vacuum state propagates through our universe, converting its physical laws. The energy scales required make this implausible with any known or fictional mechanism, but the conceptual framework the show draws on is grounded in active theoretical physics research. ⓒ 2026 TECHTIMES.com All rights reserved.
