ROYAL OAK — The 30th annual Run Wild for the Detroit Zoo will be taking place on Sept. 13.
The event has welcomed thousands of people each year to come together and run, or walk, through the Detroit Zoo to support the animals and nature.
To mark the milestone anniversary, the run is spotlighting the alpaca, known for its resilience, curiosity and strong connection to its herd, according to the Run Wild website, which can be found with a search at runsignup.com.
“Each year, Run Wild, presented by Michigan First Credit Union continues to grow, with registration numbers increasing annually,” said Megan Gregg, senior events manager for the Detroit Zoo. “We’re excited to make this milestone year especially memorable.”
Run Wild’s start time will be at 8 a.m. for the 5K run and 8:45 a.m. for the Fun Walk at the zoo. Participants are being asked to enter through Gate 1 on 10 Mile Road.
The 5K will start on the 10 Mile Service Drive and go through Huntington Woods. The end of the race will be inside the zoo.
The Fun Walk will be a 1.25-mile walk through the zoo, where participants can wander the zoo at a leisurely pace and enjoy educational activities and treat stations along the way.
There are three ticket options available for the event. There is a $50 5K run/walk, a $45 Fun Walk pass, and a virtual 5K Run/Walk. Registration for the virtual option will end Sept. 9 at 8 a.m. Prices will increase for the tickets after Sept. 11.
New this year, the 5K course will end in the heart of the zoo in front of the Holtzman Wildlife Foundation Red Panda Forest.
“We introduced a new course that is more focused within the zoo, allowing participants to fully experience the unique atmosphere the Detroit Zoo has to offer,” Gregg said. “We’ve already seen an increase in registrations this year, and we hope to continue that upward trend by creating an exceptional experience for both returning participants and first-time runners. As we build on the event’s 30-year legacy, our goal is to continue growing participation and community support year after year.”
Registration also includes a post-race celebration at Main Picnic Grove and access to the entire zoo, including the Erb Discovery Trails. There will also be a 30th anniversary medal and T-shirt provided.
Gregg said that the alpaca was chosen as the animal to be highlighted this year based on the Fred and Barbara Erb Discovery Trails opening.
“With Fred and Barbara Erb Discovery Trails opening earlier this year, we really wanted to highlight a habitat within that space. Known for its resilience, curiosity and their strong connection to the herd, alpacas remind us that we are stronger together,” she said.
The main goal of the run is to raise money for veterinary materials used to keep the animals healthy, and proceeds go to The Ruth Roby Animal Health complex.
“The Ruth Roby Animal Health complex is outfitted with a range of diagnostic equipment that allows us to provide state-of-the-art medical care to the large variety of species and animals who call the Detroit Zoo and Belle Isle Nature Center home,” said Dr. Ann Duncan, head veterinarian and associate vice president of life sciences. “Funds initially raised through Run Wild allowed the zoo to create an endowment that supports the purchase and upgrade of this equipment over the years.”
Over the past few years, the money has gone toward a new dental machine used to scale and polish teeth during routine exams, according to Duncan. It also performs endodontic procedures.
“We have used proceeds from Run Wild to purchase a dental X-ray machine, endoscopy equipment, hoof-trimming equipment, and many other items crucial to the medical care of the animals who live at the Detroit Zoo and Belle Isle Nature Center. Our next purchase will be a new anesthesia monitoring unit,” Duncan said.
The proceeds collected from last year’s run came out to $138,347, and this year the zoo hopes to raise even more.
