Quick summary: Ruby Chow's, an Atlanta restaurant, chose SpotOn over Toast for its restaurant management system, citing faster support, automated tip calculations that save close to an hour and a half each night, and a SpotOn Capital restaurant loan that cut its financing costs by about 40%. Ruby Chow’s is an Asian fusion restaurant in Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward, near the BeltLine and Ponce City Market. The restaurant opened in February 2020, just weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic transformed the hospitality industry, and went on to survive, evolve and build a loyal following through one of the most challenging periods for restaurants. Today, Ruby Chow’s is led by restaurateur Mike Blum, General Manager and Beverage Director Brian Seo, and a growing culinary and hospitality team focused on the restaurant’s next chapter, with a menu drawing from Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Southeast Asian influences through shareable small plates and longtime favorites including shoyu tamago, shaking beef. and Chengdu Brussels sprouts. The decision comes as restaurant owners take a harder look at what their restaurant technology actually buys them. Margins are thin and costs are still rising for most operators, but they’re not waiting to take action. According to the National Restaurant Association's 2026 State of the Restaurant Industry report, six in 10 operators plan technology investments this year aimed at improving the guest experience, with 54% focused on front-of-house productivity tools. For an independent operator like Ruby Chow's, that means asking whether a restaurant POS and its financing options are worth what they cost, in dollars and in time. Why Ruby Chow's chose SpotOn: Reporting, automated tips and a loan that pays for itself The decision to choose SpotOn over Toast came down to three things for Ruby Chow’s leaders: support, reporting, and financing. “We switched from Toast to SpotOn for three main reasons,” said Brian Seo, General Manager and Partner at Ruby Chow’s. “The most important one being the customer service is so much better. With Toast, you'd have to call the support line and just wait on hold, and that's not service in this business. SpotOn has a dedicated account manager for me, and their support is so much faster. It's easy to feel like I have someone in my corner.” For Seo, that combination of support, reporting, and financing is what makes SpotOn the best restaurant POS fit for a restaurant like his: one system handling the day-to-day and the back office, backed by people who pick up the phone. SpotOn's reporting tools give Seo a clearer read on the restaurant's numbers than his previous system did, while automating tip calculations has cut a task that used to eat into his evenings. “SpotOn has more in-depth reporting, and numbers are super important in the restaurant business,” said Brian Seo, General Manager and Partner at Ruby Chow’s. “They basically automate all the tips for me. It's so much easier, and it saves me about an hour and a half every night.” Beyond the point-of-sale switch, Ruby Chow's also used a SpotOn Capital restaurant loan to consolidate its existing debt into a single payment. Compared to a traditional restaurant line of credit or small business loan, which typically comes with fixed monthly payments regardless of how business is doing, SpotOn Capital's repayment adjusts with sales. “I got a really great capital loan from SpotOn, and it helped me consolidate everything into one easy payment,” said Brian Seo, General Manager and Partner at Ruby Chow’s. “It saves me about 40% compared to what I had with Toast.” Advertisement Ruby Chow's now runs its point-of-sale, tip management, and reporting on SpotOn's restaurant POS platform, and used SpotOn Capital for restaurant funding to consolidate its financing.
