Eddie later described the solo as a nod to one of his greatest influences, Eric Clapton. Released in June 1988 as the second single from OU812, “When It’s Love” became the album’s biggest pop hit. It reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart and climbed to No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it one of Van Halen’s highest-charting singles. The accompanying performance-style video also received strong exposure during the MTV era, presenting Van Halen as a confident and unified live band. Hagar’s powerful delivery, Eddie’s unmistakable smile and the group’s natural chemistry helped sell the song’s emotional message. “When It’s Love” became a regular part of Van Halen’s concerts and remains one of the defining songs of the Hagar years. It proved that the band could create a heartfelt power ballad without losing its muscular rock sound—and that sometimes the best answer to love’s biggest question is simply, “You’ll know.”
