В Гримсби начались работы по удалению асбеста из центральной библиотеки

Road closures announced as asbestos removal work begins on Grimsby Central Library The asbestos removal marks a "significant milestone" in efforts to regenerate the library building Bethany Lodge Senior Reporter Work to remove asbestos from Grimsby Central Library is underway. North East Lincolnshire Council said “initial mobilisation work” started on Monday 7 September, with main works to commence in October. ‌ The library has been closed since March 2025, with councillors expecting it to reopen no earlier than 2029. Water damage led to asbestos becoming unsafe and kicked off a regeneration project that could cost between £12m and £14m. Estimates for asbestos removal were around £2.3m. A temporary library currently operates out of Freshney Place shopping centre. ‌ New Street will be closed off to traffic from Osborne Street from October 6. This will allow the contractor to have a safe working area for their site, the council said. It also gives the company somewhere to place containers that will remove the asbestos. The pavement against the library on New Street will also be closed off, but pedestrians will be able to use the other side of the New Street pathway normally. “Further localised closures” of pavement around the library on Osborne Street and George Street will also be in place at times during the work. The company will use an access platform in order to perform work on the building’s windows. ‌ The contract is being carried out by professional asbestos removal company, Rhodar Industrial Services Ltd. The council called the works a “significant milestone” in the future of Grimsby Central Library. Next up will be the development of a “full business case to support its long-term regeneration”, North East Lincolnshire Council said. The council will hold workshops with interested parties to shape the future of the building, following recommendations from the Libraries Select Committee. The council says the workshops will be a chance for local people and partners to collaborate and assess potential future uses of the building. The aim is to “design a modern library service that meets the current and future needs of the borough”.
