River 'foam' which saw animals die, is not linked to Brislington industrial fire
A number of animals died after a 'foam' incident following a major fire in Brislington
Suspected pollution in a river in Brislington, which saw a number of animals die, is not linked to a huge firefighting response last week, the fire service confirms.
It has been reported that eels, fish, and a bird showed up dead in Brislington Brook on Friday, September 4, days after a major fire response was called to an industrial unit fire on Emery Road in Brislington on Tuesday, September 1.
BristolLive previously reported that fish, eels, and a bird died after "foam" was seen in the river after the fire.
Local group Friends of Brislington Book posted on social media to say there were reports of foam billowing from the water, along with a rancid smell, in the days following the fire.
Avon Fire and Rescue Service said that during the huge inferno, it took "steps to prevent contaminants" from entering waterways by blocking drains and containing runoff to prevent any impact on the local environment.
In a statement, the fire service told BristolLive it was aware of "references to firefighting foam" in nearby waterways.
The fire service confirmed that during the industrial blaze, there was "no firefighting foam used at any time".
At the peak of the fire, 16 engines were on scene. Firefighters brought the blaze under control the following day.
It is believed the fire was started deliberately.
Avon Fire and Rescue Service said: “Reducing the impact of contaminants on the local environment is extremely important to Avon Fire and Rescue Service.

"During incidents, we work closely with the Environment Agency throughout, seeking and following their advice to ensure the most appropriate environmental protection measures are in place.
"The Environment Agency was informed at an early stage of this incident and remained involved throughout, carrying out a range of checks and assessments.
"In line with their guidance, we took steps to try to prevent contaminants from spreading by blocking drains, containing run-off where possible, and limiting any potential impact on local waterways and surrounding areas. "We are aware of references to firefighting foam in nearby waterways. However, no firefighting foam was used at any time during our response to this incident.”
