River Bend Film Festival returns to Goshen with more than 70 films, multiple venues GOSHEN, Ind. (WSBT) — The River Bend Film Festival is back in Goshen, kicking off the festivities on Thursday, bringing more than 70 independent films to the area. But this year's festival is about more than what's on the big screen. Organizers are expanding into the community and giving local student filmmakers a bigger platform. Years ago, the festival showed films in more than one location, and now they are doing it again. One of those locations this year is at Greencroft. The festival is bringing free documentary screenings directly to residents there, choosing films specifically for that audience. "This year we wanted to bring that back but with more of a community emphasis and focus on a segment of the community that maybe wasn't able to come down to the theater or maybe the content didn't appeal to them as much," said Kyle Hufford, chair of the board of River Bend Film Festival. That same idea of making film more accessible carries over to the festival's youngest filmmakers. Thursday night, the free Goshen College & Beyond showcase will feature films made by Goshen College students and other emerging filmmakers. "Riverbend Film Festival is all about filmmaking and film enjoyment, and so we have these stories that these Goshen College students are telling, these narratives, these expressions, and to be able to provide a platform for that to partner with our local college and those students, is really what's at the heart of the festival," said Neil King, River Bend Film Festival director. For the students, getting that work in front of an audience can be difficult. But this showcase gives them a theater, an audience and a chance to connect with filmmakers working in the industry. "I think it's validation for students to get their films in a film festival, you know to be recognized in that way and also to have an audience to appreciate the work that they put into it. It's hard for student independent filmmakers to get an audience for their films in that way," said Hufford. There's even more new programming this year, including a free family-friendly film block during Downtown Goshen's First Fridays. The festival runs through Saturday, with more than 70 films, filmmaker Q&As and special guest Doug Jones, who will appear at a screening of The Shape of Water Saturday night. Tickets are still available online, and if you want to attend the festival, you can find those tickets on their website.
