Richard T. Amerson, longtime resident of Port Townsend and former owner of Red Cedar Realty, died July 25 at his home in Garberville, California. His family was with him at the time of his death, including sons Rio, Django and Eli and daughter Laina, as well as former wife Marie and girlfriend Liz. He lived with Parkinson’s disease and was injured in a fall that led to hospitalization and death. He was 83. A farm boy from Clear Lake, South Dakota, Amerson became a world traveler and adventurer. He graduated from San Francisco State College in the 60s, served in the Peace Corps and visited Colombia, Venezuela and Costa Rica, where he honed his Spanish skills. He and Marie moved to Port Townsend in 1977 after living in a dome in the woods in Wisconsin. A carpenter and builder, Amerson built homes in the area before becoming a Realtor. He spent his final years on a hilltop in Northern California in a home he built for himself. Richard made friends easily. He was a gifted storyteller known for his sharp sense of humor and always looking for the next thing. He enjoyed playing the guitar and singing with his brother and five sisters as well as with Marie and their children. Music was important to all of them.
