Residents fight to save Family Dollar store in Melrose: ‘It’s heartbreaking’ MELROSE, Fla. (WCJB) — Residents in Melrose are fighting to keep their local Family Dollar store from closing. They say the store is an important source of affordable necessities, and employees are worried about what the closure could mean for their jobs. Residents say the store on State Road 21 keeps people in the community rather than traveling away to get their necessities. The possible closure comes after the loss of two other longtime businesses on the same block. Williamson’s Food Store closed in early 2025. Chiappini’s, a family-owned store that served Melrose for 91 years, closed later last year. Resident Destiny Johntry said she is worried about losing another place to shop. “I’m very distraught. I’ve grown up in Melrose... with the people here; they’ve taken Williamsons. They’ve taken Chippini’s, and now they’ve taken our Winn-Dixie,” Johntry said. Some Family Dollar workers could be unemployed if the store closes. “It’s heartbreaking. Very heartbreaking to know that this place could not be here after October; that’s what makes it more devastating that all these people are kind of below the poverty line... and this job is, to most of them, all they have,” Johntry continued. The community has put together a petition asking Family Dollar to reconsider. A Dollar General store is located down the street, but residents say they don’t see it as a replacement for this store. The petition has nearly 150 signatures. Residents hope they can convince the company to keep the location open. Click here to subscribe to our newsletter. Copyright 2026 WCJB. All rights reserved.
