Repeat parking violator sentenced for shooting tow truck driver in New Haven NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WFSB) - A man warned several times not to park in a restricted area of New Haven was sentenced for shooting the tow truck driver tasked with towing his car. Jamar Boyd, 44, of New Haven, was sentenced on Aug. 3 to serve 20 years in prison followed by 10 years of special parole, according to New Haven Judicial District state’s attorney John Doyle Jr. Boyd pleaded guilty to first-degree assault, criminal attempt to commit first-degree assault, and criminal possession of a firearm. Doyle said the incident happened on Garden Street on Aug. 25, 2024. “A neighbor informed [Boyd] that his vehicle was being towed because it lacked the required parking permit for the area,” Doyle said. “The defendant had previously been cited numerous times for parking that same vehicle without a valid permit.” When Boyd learned that his vehicle was being towed, Doyle said he left the apartment, approached the tow truck driver, who was already driving away, and demanded that he stop and release the vehicle. “As the driver continued down the street, the defendant retrieved a handgun from his waistband and fired five rounds at the truck,” Doyle said. “One round struck the tow truck, and another traveled across the street into an apartment, hitting a woman in the face.” Prosecutors said the woman, a young mother, had been in her front room playing with her two minor children when she was struck. “Fortunately, she survived her injuries, though the incident caused severe trauma to her and her children,” Doyle said. Boyd is a convicted felon, so he should not have had a handgun. He served time for shooting another man in New Haven in 2004. The incident left the victim paralyzed. He was paroled in 2022.
