В городе Джейсборн начнется демонтаж поврежденного молнией памятника Маунт Оглеторп

Removal of lightning-struck historic Georgia monument begins Editor’s note: The video above is from previous coverage. ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — The City of Jasper plans to begin removal work of the Mount Oglethorpe Monument on Tuesday. The first order of business is the removal of the structure’s vertical panels, the city said. After that, the base of the monument could possibly be moved and taken in pieces to a granite and marble company “for safe keeping,” the city said. PREVIOUS STORY: Historic Georgia monument suffers storm damage A cost estimate and restoration plan will soon be in the works. The removal work was supposed to begin last week, but was postponed due to a family issue with the contractor. The Mount Oglethorpe Monument was damaged in late July by an apparent lightning strike during a wave of heavy storms in north Georgia. The blast left scattered chunks of marble at the base of the statue, a popular tourist spot in Pickens County. “I can’t believe of all the objects around, that’s the one that got hit,” resident Christopher Feldt said at the time. Traffic impacts The city plans to leave N. Main Street open during removal work, but be on the lookout for closures between Mark Whitfield Street and DB Carrol Street. On Tuesday, the entrance to Chambers Street will be closed for equipment/machinery, the city said. This is a developing story. Stay with Atlanta News First for updates. Copyright 2026 WANF.
