RedCan Graffiti Jam returns to Eagle Butte July 8-11 with 11 featured artists RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - The Cheyenne River Youth Project is bringing nationally recognized street artists, live performances and youth activities back to Eagle Butte for the 12th Annual RedCan Invitational Graffiti Jam. The four-day festival runs July 8-11 and will feature 11 graffiti and mural artists from across the country creating large-scale public artwork while celebrating Lakota culture, language and community. Returning artists include Cheyenne River Lakota artist TamiJoy, who designed this year’s RedCan poster and merchandise, along with Cyfi, 179, Hoka, Biafra, Wundr, J.Duh, Amp and Brady Scott. First-time RedCan artists this year are California muralists Deity and Wes77. During the first two days of the festival, artists will paint murals throughout Eagle Butte, adding to the more than 125 public murals RedCan has helped create since the event began in 2015. “Through the years, our RedCan artists have brought 125 murals to life across our community,” said Julie Garreau, founder and CEO of the Cheyenne River Youth Project. “It’s hard to put into words the transformative power of this kind of public art.” On July 10-11, activities move to the organization’s Waniyetu Wowapi (Winter Count) Art Park, where visitors can watch artists paint while enjoying skateboard painting, chalk art, hoop dancing, spoken-word performances, water games and other family-friendly activities. Teen interns and Lakota Art Fellows will work alongside the visiting artists throughout the festival, while younger children can participate in free art activities. The event also features poetry workshops led by award-winning two-spirit Lakota storyteller Taté Walker, along with performances by rapper and singer Murs, Bazille, Oglala Lakota singer Reed Two Bulls and hoop dancers The Sampson Brothers. Festival attendees will also have the opportunity to see the Cheyenne River Youth Project’s new arts and culture center, currently under construction at the art park. The facility is expected to expand year-round arts programming when completed later this year. According to the organization, nearly 100% of participating youth surveyed after previous RedCan events said they want the festival to continue, while more than 90% said it made them feel proud of their culture and community.
