Rangeland forum to focus on post-wildfire practices Published 8:15 am Wednesday, August 26, 2026 Post-wildfire practices are to be emphasized at the Rangeland Fall Forum slated in Southern Idaho Sept. 11-12. The Sept. 11 session is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the College of Southern Idaho Herrett Center for Arts & Science, 315 Falls Ave., Twin Falls. The Sept. 12 session is to be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the University of Idaho’s Rinker Rock Creek Ranch near Hailey, Fire activity is increasing across the state’s rangelands, leading to questions, conversations and ideas about recovery, adaptation and restoration, according to an event flyer. The forum will focus on “real-world examples and practical lessons” from post-fire recovery efforts in the state’s south-central region. The annual forum is a partnership between the UI Rangeland Center and the university’s James A. and Louise McClure Center for Public Policy Research. In recent years, “we have been focused on a lot more fire-related research,” said Scott Jensen, UI area extension rangeland educator, He expects some research presented at the forum to apply directly to what the state could face in the next few years given several recent large fires. As the current fire season is large and severe, and as fires are increasing across the West, “we need to be able to recover after those fires,” said Eric Winford, Rangeland Center associate director and a UI research assistant professor of rangeland ecology and management. “When you just think about how to strategize and prioritize our resources, what is the latest science on how we can improve and steward these resources, and what are the policies that support that?” Sharing the latest science is a key aspect of the Fall Forum, he said. Research to be presented looks at topics such as fire severity and recovery, post-fire grazing and how these factors influence ecosystem traits. “This is an opportunity to learn and share information that can support the stewardship of rangelands,” Winford said. Scheduled panel discussion and interactive session topics Sept. 11 at CSI include post-fire policy, the science of post-fire recovery, conservation readiness, and what new research and policies are needed. Sept. 12 sessions at the ranch will focus on post-fire grazing test plots, drones and herbicide treatments, and landscape conservation strategies.
