Книга Роберта Эдвардса «Quit, Travel, Grow» призывает бросить корпоративную гонку ради путешествий

Review written by Steuart Pennington On a monthly basis I like to review books written by South Africans, my last review was of Adrian Gore’s book ‘The Four Principles’ https://www.sagoodnews.co.za/the-four-principles-by-adrian-gore/ a well-researched, highly focused, quite technical book on ‘Impact, Life and Leadership’, essentially a business manuscript, which, I’m sure, will become prescribed reading at top business schools around the world, and so it should be! Robert Edwards’ book ‘Quit, Travel, Grow’ couldn’t be more different. Robert grew up on a farm in Zululand, graduated as a Chartered Accountant from Rhodes University, and after a brief spell working in SA, moved to London. After seven years in corporate finance, he rather suddenly felt he was ‘caught in a hamster wheel doing the same things every day. I realized I needed to step off and clear my head.’ 12 months later, after wandering around most of the planet, he returned home, broke, but ‘having learnt about the world, had experiences which I couldn’t have imagined, and met wonderful people along the way.’ For anybody who has had the travel bug, or who still wants to travel, ‘Quit, Travel, Grow’ is a worthwhile read. For me it was an interesting combination; of that well-known book by American travel writer Arthur Frommer ‘Europe on $10 a day’ published in the ‘70’s, as a guide to affordable travel; a personal diary; thought provoking comparisons and experiences; travel expenses; intimacies with old friends and new friends; and a number of funny stories along the way. As you, the reader, wander around 21 countries with Robert; visiting clubs; experiencing advanced technology; travelling on broken buses and bullet trains; marveling at different cultures; witnessing how local people earn and spend money; eating astonishingly varied cuisine; visiting local markets; remarking on the different cost-of-living between neighbouring countries; pondering on an interesting array of comparisons; examining the different workings of governments, getting into personal danger; and all-the-time reflecting on the days adventure, you will enjoy the read. It is lighthearted and chatty with plenty of anecdotal surprises, and in that respect surprisingly enjoyable. If you know anybody who has the travel bug, young or old, ‘Quit, Travel, Grow’ comes highly recommended.
