Рабочий погиб от отравления ядовитыми грибами, собранными на территории курорта

Punga Cove worker Justus Casale died after eating toxic mushrooms, coroner finds Justus Casale was enjoying an evening with friends when he consumed alcohol, cannabis and wild dried mushrooms. He had harvested the mushrooms at Punga Cove resort, where he worked as a maintenance worker in the Marlborough Sounds. Sometime after midnight on 9 April, his friend noticed Casale was slurring his words and unable to stand. The friend called an ambulance at 12.15am but cancelled it after Casale's condition improved. However, after Casale began having trouble breathing, an ambulance attended. Paramedics diagnosed Casale with hyperventilation with a secondary impression of acute drug intoxication. Casale did not want to go to hospital and remained at his friend's home. At 7.30am, Casale said he was "still shaky" but ready for work, and returned home. When he was not at work at 8am, his friend went looking for him and found him lying beside his gate. Emergency services attended but Casale was unable to be resuscitated. Associate Coroner Dustin Luo earlier released findings into Casale's death, ruling it accidental. The coroner found the 47-year-old died of subacute toxicity from ingesting fungal agents, resulting in cardiorespiratory arrest. A summary of the findings was published last week in the latest Coroners Court Recommendations Recap, which contains recent coronial recommendations and comments. Coroner Luo detailed that many poisonous mushrooms looked similar to hallucinogenic mushrooms. "There were several toxic fungal species within the New Zealand environment with potential for wide-ranging effects including neurological and cardiotoxic effects with acute on chronic liver and gastrointestinal effects. "There is a real risk to the community from the consumption of unknown harvested mushrooms. "Mr Casale's death illustrates the danger of gathering and ingesting fungal species of an unknown origin." The possession and consumption of magic mushrooms, grown in the wild or elsewhere, is an offence under the Misuse of Drugs Act. The mushrooms are a Class A controlled drug. Coroner Luo endorsed previous messaging and health warnings about consuming unknown harvested mushrooms. * This story originally appeared in the The New Zealand Herald.
