Профессор Карунадаса призвал поддержать генерала Саллая, обвиненного в организации терактов

PUBLIC SECURITY AND NATIONAL SECURITY FOR A NATION IS PARAMOUNT Posted on August 14th, 2026 By Prof. K. Karunadasa This is not the best era to publish controversial articles, especially while sensitive political and crucial national security cases remain pending in the country’s highest courts. Public and national security must always take precedence over sensationalism. Global powers such as the United States with the CIA, Russia’s SVR, Israel with Mossad, the United Kingdom with MI6, and India with RAW have established dedicated intelligence organizations strictly to protect their sovereignty. We, too, must hold a profound love for our nation. As the visionary author Sir Arthur C. Clarke famously noted, Sri Lanka is a remarkably beautiful island that feels like a compact universe in itself. Yet, many of our own people fail to realize just how crucial and desirable our island is, even as leading global powers set their eyes upon it, a value often seen more clearly from the outside than from within. Throughout history, our strategic importance in the Indian Ocean has demanded visionary diplomacy. In ancient times, Emperor Ashoka of India recognized our nation’s unique identity. Rather than seeking conquest, he fostered a deep friendship with King Devanampiyatissa, sending his son, Arahat Mahinda, and daughter, Theri Sanghamitta, to gift us Buddhism and a rich cultural foundation. It stands as one of the earliest examples of masterclass foreign policy one rooted in soft power, mutual respect, and cultural alliance. In modern times, no leader executed foreign policy with greater finesse than Madam Sirimavo Bandaranaike, the world’s first female Prime Minister and an astute Foreign Minister. She navigated complex global dynamics with neutrality, strength, and foresight, offering a blueprint we must remember today. As India asserts itself as the dominant power of the Indian Ocean, we must remain friendly yet clear-eyed. While maintaining warm relations, our leaders must always recognize the ulterior strategic motives of regional giants. History teaches us that today is built on yesterday, and tomorrow depends on the wisdom of today taking cues from past leadership is essential to safeguarding our future. Therefore, it is time for us to think of our nation in a novel strategic way, navigating a complex web of global turmoil where the world seems dangerously close to major conflict. Every action we take must be carefully weighed, writers and commentators in particular must exercise immense responsibility with their words. National defense relies on deep sacrifice and discreet dedication. Major General Suresh Sallay has throughout his life proven to be a patriotic citizen who mastered the craft of collecting vital information discreetly on behalf of the nation. He comes from a devoted family whose mother gave three children to the service and protection of the country. Having dedicated his career to fighting terrorism through intelligence work, he now ironically finds himself detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), a law originally designed to detain terrorists for renewable 90-day periods without direct access to courts or restricted detention locations. The allegations leveled against Major General Sallay suggest he was responsible for or masterminded the tragic Easter Sunday attacks, which caused immense loss of life and widespread destruction. The head of the Catholic Church, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, has taken up this narrative, alleging that the bombers, whose father, Ibrahim, contested on a JVP ticket, blew themselves up to help Gotabaya Rajapaksa assume power. This theory remains difficult for many to rationalize, why would radical extremists, acting on religious motivations to attain heavenly rewards, sacrifice themselves merely to elevate a staunch Sinhala Buddhist leader into political office? Unable to pinpoint new culprits beyond those already investigated, charged, and punished by official commissions, much of the discourse has turned toward gossip and politically driven accusations targeting those who served the state neutrally. Official commissions have previously completed investigations, rendered decisions, and identified those responsible. Yet today, Major General Sallay remains in detention, where his health continues to deteriorate, even as national and public security are viewed by many as being at a critical low. While media outlets remain hesitant, citizens worry in silence, parents feel powerless, and the security forces observe the situation closely, it becomes the duty of patriotic citizens to stand by dedicated officers and their families. As a young, energetic officer supported by his brothers and parents, his vast experience and intelligence knowledge remain vital to protecting the nation’s future. In times of such uncertainty and narrative conflict, citizens must exercise deep patience and critical thought, drawing wisdom from foundational spiritual teachings. As written in the Dhammapada, enduring patience and forbearance is the supreme virtue (Verse 184). Furthermore, citizens must anchor themselves in the guidance of the Kalama Sutthra, which instructs us on how to evaluate claims, public discourse, and rumors by reminding us not to go upon hearsay, tradition, rumor, or handed-down scripture, but to accept and act only upon that which we know for ourselves to be skillful and praised by the wise. It is the solemn duty of every human being not to blindly absorb media gossip or unproven accusations. In this volatile era, citizens must study the principles of both the Dhammapada and the Kalama Sutthra, offering moral strength to those who served the country while navigating an increasingly complex world with patience, discernment, and care.
