Powell County Kiwanis Club disbands after 34 years Club cites lack of volunteers, donates remaining funds to local organizations STANTON, Ky. (WKYT) - After more than three decades of serving its community, the Powell County Kiwanis Club is disbanding, citing a lack of volunteers. “The mission of the club, you hate to think that it’s not being carried out. It just got more and more challenging as our numbers shrank and it’s unfortunately at this point just a numbers game,” said Ethan Moore, vice president of public relations for the Powell County Kiwanis Club. The international motto of the Kiwanis Club is to “serve the children of the world.” For nearly four decades, the local chapter in Stanton has done that through partnering with school organizations, giving away scholarships and hosting children’s events around the holidays. Moore said the manpower is no longer there. “So, I think a lot of people that would want to volunteer, they’re tired when they get home, they want to spend time with their families at their church and with their community,” Moore said. Acting Treasurer Kayla Carroll said the family the club created was real. “I was thinking back today about activities, about being pregnant at an Easter Egg hunt with my daughter. Just the family that Kiwanis has created and the things that we are able to do for our community, and we have just loved every minute of it,” Carroll said. During its last meeting, the club presented approximately $12,000 in donations, most of its remaining financial assets, to organizations that will continue its mission, including the public library, family resource centers and the local Lions Club. “We want to see the goal of the Kiwanis club continue to go. We hosted the Kiwanis Easter Egg hunt yearly, and thousands of kids every year would come to the park, and we at the Lions Club want to continue that in honor of the Kiwanis Club,” said Dean Rogers, president of the Powell County Lions Club. Misty Marsh, president of the Powell County Kiwanis Club, said the club’s mission will continue. “It feels really good because we know this will continue, the Easter egg hunt will still continue, and the Christmas parade that we do will still continue. We’re sad, but we’re really grateful to know that we will still continue,” Marsh said. Copyright 2026 WKYT. All rights reserved.
