The Place for History: The Man Behind Greene County’s Name
From strict Quaker roots to war hero
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - Drivers who pass a Greene County sign are seeing a tribute to one of George Washington’s top generals. Greene County, Missouri, is named after Nathanael Greene.
Greene grew up in a strict Quaker home in Rhode Island. He clashed with his father over his hunger for books and learning. That curiosity, including reading about famous military leaders, helped turn him into the strategist many historians credit with helping win the war in the southern colonies.
But due to a childhood injury and a limp, his military career started off rough.
“He didn’t, didn’t particularly impress in a military manner style, when they were doing maneuvers in the army. But there was something else about him that caught people, and eventually he worked his way into being elected the commander of that army in Rhode Island,” said Bill Eddelman, State Historical Society of Missouri.
The interview also covered Greene’s life after the war, and the reason so many counties like Greene County, Missouri are named after him.
Other notes of interest:
- Greene died in 1786 at age 43 from sunstroke at Mulberry Grove Plantation in Georgia. Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin there.
- Greene County, Missouri was named in 1833.
- Other Missouri counties named for Revolutionary War figures (Lincoln, Washington, Madison counties).
