Pet Shop Boys празднуют 30-летие альбома Bilingual: три десятилетия электронной музыки с латиноамериканским ритмом

Pet Shop Boys’ sixth studio album Bilingual turned 30 on September 2, 2026, marking three decades since Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe expanded their electronic pop vocabulary with Latin rhythms, multilingual lyrics and an international cast of collaborators. by Paul Cashmere Pet Shop Boys’ Bilingual reaches its 30th anniversary on September 2, 2026, three decades after its original UK release through Parlophone. The sixth studio album by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe followed the duo’s 1995 Alternative collection and became one of their most musically expansive records, incorporating Latin American percussion, Spanish and Portuguese lyrics, New York dance influences and a Russian choir. The album peaked at No. 3 in Australia and No. 4 in the UK. Bilingual occupies an important position in the Pet Shop Boys catalogue because it documented a period when Tennant and Lowe were deliberately pushing their established electronic framework into new rhythmic and cultural territory. The album’s international character was partly shaped by the duo’s 1994 Discovery Tour through South America. What initially began as an intention to make an album entirely influenced by Latin American music ultimately developed into a broader mixture of styles. The finished record retained the Pet Shop Boys’ electronic foundation while introducing samba percussion, Brazilian instrumentation, Spanish influences and orchestral and choral elements. The recording process extended from April 1995 into 1996, with sessions taking place in London, New York and Moscow. The duo worked at Sarm West, Bunk Junk & Genius and Sarm Hook End in England, while New York sessions at Axis and Bass Hit involved producer Danny Tenaglia. A Russian choir was recorded at the State House of Broadcasting and Sound Recording in Moscow for “A Red Letter Day”. Several outside musicians and producers contributed to the album. Chris Porter worked on five tracks, while Paul Roberts and Andy Williams of K-Klass produced “Metamorphosis”. Tenaglia produced “Before” and “Saturday Night Forever”. SheBoom, a Scottish women’s drumming ensemble specialising in samba rhythms, also contributed to the project, alongside percussionist Robin Jones. The album’s bilingual concept was literal as well as thematic. “Discoteca” and “Single-Bilingual” combine English and Spanish, while “Se a vida é (That’s the Way Life Is)” incorporates Portuguese. “Se a vida é” was based on a song by Brazilian group Olodum. “It Always Comes as a Surprise” incorporates Brazilian percussion including berimbau and cuíca, while “To Step Aside” uses a sample of Spanish gypsy music. The commercial campaign produced four singles. “Before” was released in April 1996 and reached No. 7 in the UK. “Se a vida é (That’s the Way Life Is)” followed in August and reached No. 8. “Single-Bilingual” peaked at No. 14, while “A Red Letter Day” reached No. 9 in March 1997. Bilingual also extended the duo’s established relationship with dance culture. Tennant described “Metamorphosis”, “Electricity”, “Before” and “Saturday Night Forever” as effectively a “New York dance album” contained within the larger record. The album’s production combined programmed electronic elements with live percussion, backing vocals, brass, guitar and choir, producing a broader instrumental palette than the duo’s earlier work. Its commercial performance was substantial. Bilingual reached No. 3 on the Australian Albums chart, No. 4 in the UK and No. 39 on the US Billboard 200. The source material records worldwide sales of 1.5 million copies, with certification or sales figures also recorded for markets including the UK, Spain, Japan, Brazil and the United States. The album also continued into the following year with additional material. A 1997 special edition paired Bilingual with remixes and included “Somewhere”, the Pet Shop Boys’ interpretation of the West Side Story song. The duo performed a residency at London’s Savoy Theatre in June 1997, further extending the album era. Bilingual was subsequently revisited through the Further Listening series. A remastered edition titled Bilingual: Further Listening 1995-1997 appeared in 2001, combining the album with B-sides and previously unreleased recordings. A single-disc remaster followed in 2009, while the Further Listening edition was remastered again in 2018. The 30th anniversary provides an opportunity to reassess an album that connected several strands of Pet Shop Boys’ work. It followed the heavily instrumented approach developed on Very, but broadened the palette through international rhythms and collaborators. The result was a record that reached major markets while retaining the duo’s interest in electronic experimentation. Pet Shop Boys’ official website has also been marking individual milestones from the Bilingual period. On August 12, 2026, the duo noted the 30th anniversary of “Se a vida é (That’s the Way Life Is)”, highlighting the Bruce Weber-directed video filmed at Wet ‘n’ Wild in Orlando. Bilingual’s 30th anniversary therefore falls within a wider period of catalogue recognition for Pet Shop Boys. The album remains available in its 2018 remastered form, while the duo continue to perform material from their extensive catalogue during the 2026 Dreamworld touring cycle.
