Пользователь заменил Outlook на FairEmail ради защиты от слежки и синхронизации с серверами Microsoft

I uninstalled Outlook for Android a few months ago. What finally pushed me was one of Microsoft's support pages. I started using Outlook on Android for personal mail a couple of years ago, when I worked somewhere that ran on the Microsoft ecosystem. I liked the interface, the parity with the desktop app, and the seamless setup. I left that job long ago and kept the app because Microsoft kept adding more features that I found useful. However, this changed when I stopped assuming my mail only lived where I put it. After I read how Outlook handles third-party accounts, replacing it wasn't optional. I ended up with FairEmail, an open source client I had heard about but never really looked into. I expected the switch to have some costly tradeoffs, and it did, just not in the places I was prepared for. The issue with Outlook And Microsoft in general I don't hate Outlook. It was my go-to email app for years, and I used it more than Gmail on every device I own. My problem is documented behavior rather than a scandal, and Microsoft describes it openly as a feature. Its support page on syncing accounts to the Microsoft Cloud states that Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, and IMAP accounts in Outlook for Android can be synced to Microsoft's servers. A copy of your email, calendar, and contacts is then sent to Microsoft data centers alongside whatever your actual provider holds. I noticed this when Microsoft started pushing ads based on correspondence from my Gmail account. The same page notes that the Microsoft Services Agreement and Privacy Statement apply to that copy. Whatever your provider promised you, Microsoft's terms now cover a duplicate of the same inbox. You may have seen the claim that this data trains Microsoft's AI models. The company has denied that clearly and repeatedly, and while I'm not claiming otherwise, I'm still not comfortable. We all know how "trustworthy" big tech companies are, right? The copy of my data is enough on its own. My personal mail was passing through a company I had no relationship with beyond an app I downloaded. This isn't unique to Microsoft, which is why I didn't go running back to Gmail. I wanted an open source client that did as little as possible with my mail beyond delivering it. Why I chose FairEmail Finding an alternative that does things differently FairEmail is a mail client and nothing else, and it doesn't route anything through a server the developer controls. Setup was IMAP credentials for each of my personal accounts. There's no account to create with the developer or a sign-in step before you can reach your inbox. Two things in the listing made it appealing to 1 million+ users, including me. The app requires no special permissions, and it doesn't use Firebase Cloud Messaging, which is how most Android apps receive push. Instead, it holds an IMAP IDLE connection open to the mail server, so new messages arrive without Google in the middle. It's also the lightest mail client I've installed in years. That's pretty much the philosophy behind most of the open source Android apps I keep switching to. Do less, ask for less, tell you what you're getting. The feature that won me over It's the little things FairEmail blocks images in messages by default, and it explains why when you look for the toggle. Images are a standard tracking device, which I had never once questioned in Outlook. It goes further and tries to recognize tracking images specifically, then disables them. Links get the same treatment. A confirmation window appears before anything opens, and it has stopped me several times when I click a link out of habit. The app also strips styling and scripting out of incoming messages before displaying them, in what it calls Safe View. That means any email designed to run arbitrary code or processing on your device arrives as text. These features opened my eyes to the hidden costs of staying loyal to a single ecosystem. I wasn't comfortable in Outlook because it was safe, but because no other app had shown me the comparison. The price of privacy Only personal business here As with many platforms today, convenience is the price for privacy, and that's a shame. At least, FairEmail is upfront about most of its tradeoffs. Its documentation states clearly that it doesn't support Exchange Web Services or ActiveSync. That rules it out for most office mail, which is fine for me because I only moved my personal accounts. The annoying daily cost is the notification. FairEmail runs a foreground service with a permanent status bar entry, because that's what keeps the connection alive through doze mode. The FAQ also recommends turning off battery optimization for reliable delivery. It warns that providers with badly behaved IMAP servers force frequent reconnects and use battery power to do it. This hasn't been a problem for me, but that depends on your email host as much as the app. Anyone switching should check their provider before blaming FairEmail for a bad experience. I also expected to miss Outlook's user interface, which was close to perfected for me, but FairEmail is minimalist on purpose. There are also no summaries or smart replies, which is the opposite direction from people moving to Gmail for Gemini's inbox features. I've never used these features, so I didn't miss them. It's a fair trade Moving to FairEmail does not take me out of anyone's ecosystem. I have email accounts with all the major providers and even niche ones like ProtonMail. Google still runs my work life, and its ecosystem has become essential for most businesses, regardless of what I install on my own phone. What changed is that my personal mail no longer has to be part of that arrangement. I don't have to share a copy with anyone who doesn't need to keep it. Giving up smart replies is a very cheap price for getting back my privacy.
