Трудоемкий досуг приносит больше смысла, чем пассивный отдых: данные Бюро статистики труда США

Your Couch Time May Not Be as Restful as You Think: Harder Leisure Could Feel More Meaningful Americans age 15 and over now average 5.16 hours of leisure and sports time on a typical day, and 2.61 hours of that goes to watching television. Half of all free time, one activity. Those figures come from the American Time Use Survey 2025 results, released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on June 25, 2026, based on interviews with roughly 6,100 people. Set against a body of psychology research on how leisure produces meaning, the numbers describe a country spending its most valuable discretionary hours on the activity least likely to generate a sense of purpose. The research does not say relaxing is bad. It says something more specific and more interesting. What the Federal Numbers Actually Show Nearly everyone, 95%, does something classifiable as leisure on an average day. What varies is how much and what kind. Adults 75 and over log 7.39 hours daily. People between 35 and 44, squeezed between careers and young children, get 3.89 hours, the least of any age group. Weekend television climbs to 3.27 hours. By comparison, Americans spend an average of 16 minutes a day reading for personal interest. Children compress the picture further. Employed adults in households with no child under 18 got 4.5 hours of leisure per day, more than an hour above the 3.2 hours available to employed adults living with a child under 6. Men averaged 5.6 hours of leisure and sports overall, women 4.8. Two trends stand out against 2015. The share of Americans who socialized or communicated on an average day dropped from 38% to 30%, and average time fell from 41 minutes to 35. Meanwhile, time spent playing games or using a computer for leisure rose from 25 minutes to 37, with 15-to-19-year-olds averaging 1.5 hours, more than any other age group. One methodological note belongs here. BLS suspended all survey operations from October 1 through November 12, 2025, during the federal shutdown, leaving no diaries for September 30 through November 11. The agency reweighted the remaining fourth-quarter diaries to represent the full quarter and states plainly that the effect on estimates cannot be quantified. The headline annual averages carry that caveat. Sudoku Beat Video Watching on Meaning, Not on Enjoyment The psychology comes from a five-study paper published in Communications Psychology, part of the Nature Portfolio, covering 2,569 participants. In Study 1, with 1,145 participants, people rated effortful activities as more meaningful but less enjoyable, suggesting a trade-off between the two dimensions of wellbeing psychologists call eudaimonic and hedonic. Then the experiments. Studies 2a and 2b, with 375 and 389 participants, compared Sudoku puzzling against watching videos. Study 3, with 400 participants, compared Sudoku against a click-to-reveal tile game to control for the fact that puzzles gradually reveal a solution. Effortful activities consistently felt more meaningful, though the effect plateaued at higher levels of effort. Study 4 used experience sampling with 260 participants to capture activities as they happened in daily life. Here is the counterintuitive part. Effortful leisure fostered meaning while maintaining enjoyment, whereas other activities tended to feel less enjoyable as effort increased. The predicted trade-off did not materialize inside leisure. People expected harder fun to be less fun. It wasn't. The authors frame this against declining work hours, arguing that effortful leisure could supplement purpose people historically drew from their jobs. Rest Is Not the Villain Here It would be easy to misread this as an instruction to stop resting. The evidence does not support that reading. The experiments compared how meaningful and how enjoyable different leisure options felt. They did not measure sleep, recovery from work, stress, or any health outcome, and they say nothing about whether a depleted person would find a Sudoku grid restorative. The researchers themselves position effortful leisure as a supplement to a shrinking source of purpose, not as a replacement for downtime. The finding is narrower and more usable: among things you might do with free time, the effortful options appear to deliver more meaning without extracting an enjoyment penalty. That is a reason to add some, not to eliminate the couch. The Caveats Worth Keeping The core experiments were short, laboratory-style tasks, and meaning was self-reported on rating scales. Nothing here measured clinical depression, anxiety, or long-term health outcomes, and no study followed anyone for months to see whether a shift in leisure habits changed wellbeing durably. The BLS data and the psychology research also come from different populations and cannot be combined into a causal claim. Federal statistics describe how Americans spend time. The experiments describe what happens to reported meaning in controlled comparisons. Neither shows that television watching harms anyone. The one number that arguably deserves the most attention is not the TV figure at all. It is the eight-point drop in the share of Americans who socialize on a given day, because social connection is among the best-evidenced contributors to long-term wellbeing. Key Questions Answered How much free time do Americans actually have? An average of 5.16 hours per day of leisure and sports activity in 2025, though it ranges from 3.89 hours for adults 35 to 44 up to 7.39 hours for those 75 and over. What did the leisure research find? Across five studies with 2,569 participants, more effortful leisure activities felt more meaningful than passive ones, without reducing enjoyment. Does this mean watching TV is unhealthy? No. The research compared how meaningful and enjoyable different activities feel. It did not measure health outcomes or show that television causes harm. Should I stop relaxing? No. The studies did not measure rest, recovery, or sleep at all. The findings suggest adding effortful leisure, not eliminating downtime. What counts as effortful leisure? Activities requiring mental or physical exertion that you choose freely, such as puzzles, learning something, making things, exercise, or hobbies with a skill component. What are the biggest limitations? Short experimental tasks, self-reported outcomes, no long-term follow-up, no measurement of clinical mental health outcomes, and a federal dataset that cannot be merged with the experiments to show cause and effect.
