Родители критикуют книгу «Рыбка Радуга» за опасный урок о жертвенности ради дружбы

Parents blast Rainbow Fish book for teaching their kids 'horrible life lesson' Parents have slammed a 1992 book for teaching their little ones a horrible life lesson, admitting that the content is supposed to be sweet, but it doesn't come across that way Parents often rely on books to supplement their little ones' reading and to teach them lessons that may be challenging for them to convey. In an age-appropriate way, books can tell a story and expand a child's horizons without feeling too prescriptive, since they usually come with a ton of fun characters and pretty pictures for them to marvel over. However, one classic children's book has come under fire for its allegedly insidious message, which one parent claimed is hidden within its colourful pages. She slammed it as the "most horrible children's book ever written," and the 1992 release is not what you'll expect. The parent wrote on Quora: "The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. People love this book, but I do not like its message. It is supposed to be about sharing, but it is not." For those who haven't read the book, it's about a fish with incredible iridescent scales that look amazing in the illustrations. He vainly believes himself to be the 'most beautiful fish' in the sea, but gets sad because he has no friends. So, in order to make some friends, he gives away some of his scales on the advice of an octopus, keeping just one shiny scale for himself. He might not be the most beautiful anymore, but he does make a lot of pals. But this raised questions for some parents. They fumed: "Why does the Rainbow Fish have to give his scales away to have friends? This isn’t sharing. This is other, less beautiful, fish being mean and jealous. "It is not the fault of the Rainbow Fish that he was born with beautiful scales. To me, it’s the human equivalent of having no friends because you’re beautiful and all the other girls are jealous. You cannot give your friends pieces of yourself as the Rainbow Fish does. It’s not sharing. It’s bribing. It’s fish (people) being small, mean, and covetous. The lesson the book thinks it’s teaching is really not the message I’m reading." Media Munchies also addressed the controversy in a recent video, saying that one of the "most controversial books is just 16 pages long and covered in iridescent stickers". He showed a bunch of Goodreads reviews where readers had slammed the book as "manipulation" and "people-pleasing propaganda". However, author Marcus Pfister, at the time, said that the message of the story is intended to be that it doesn't matter "how you look and how you dress," rather that it's "much more important what you feel, and what you do". But critics say it teaches a concerning lesson "about boundaries and consent," with the Rainbow Fish literally giving pieces of himself away. Media Munchies asked: "Is Rainbow Fish learning generosity and letting go of his ego? Or is he being taught to give up pieces of himself in exchange for friendship? "Maybe The Rainbow Fish isn’t really controversial because it teaches one bad lesson. Maybe it’s controversial because the exact same story can teach two completely different ones". What do you think about The Rainbow Fish? Is it troubling, or an innocent book with a sweet message? Let us know in the comments...
