The launch of SeaComposites, a licensed database of seawater-immersion screening data, is designed to help engineers select composite materials for long-term submerged marine and offshore applications.

Orthotropic Engineering Ltd. (Cirencester, U.K.), an engineering design consultancy offering composite materials engineering services, has announced the launch of seacomposites.com, a source of seawater-conditioned composites screening data for industry.
For a number of years, Orthotropic has been manufacturing, conditioning and testing a variety of composite materials to understand the effects of long-term seawater immersion on key performance indicators — with a focus on materials combinations most relevant to marine and offshore applications. What the company discovered is that there can be significant differences from one material to the next, even when the products in question target the same market.
Therefore, when selecting composite materials for long-term submerged applications, it is important to consider the effect of immersion on key strength parameters.
“Typically, there are three options available to engineers at this stage of a project, all with unfortunate limitations,” explains Matthew Dawson, MEng, director of Orthotropic Engineering Ltd. “Published data is available but this tends to be limited in scope, or even anonymized; manufacturers datasheets rarely offer information in relation to long-term durability; and a bespoke screening program can add many months and significant expense to a project timeline. So, we’ve decided to make our data available to license into third-party projects, providing an alternative path that offers real and useful comparative data more quickly and at lower cost than a bespoke screening program.”
“We continue to generate data for additional and new materials, so are also keen to hear from materials suppliers who would like their offerings to be considered,” Dawson adds.
