Омаха запустила программу бордюрного компостирования для снабжения фермеров органикой

Omaha curbside composting program pushes for more sign-ups Hillside Solutions turns kitchen and yard scraps into soil for Nebraska farmers OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Curbside composting is in its fourth month of operation in Omaha, and program leaders are urging more residents to sign up. Hillside Solutions Compost Club currently serves more than 300 homes in Omaha. The organization wants to multiply that number by more than five, reaching 1,600 homes by the end of the year. The program is the first of its kind to take Omaha trash and turn it into farming material. Compost Club bins collect yard waste and food to turn scraps into nutrient-packed soil for Nebraska farmers. “To my knowledge, this is the only program of its kind in the entire United States,” said Sasha Patricia, Compost Club program director. “I genuinely feel like we are going to heal America one farm field at a time.” Program growth and goals Hillside Solutions said it hopes to regenerate land that helps feed thousands of people every day, but said that cannot happen without more residents signing up. “They care,” Patricia said. “They want what’s best for our environment, for our city, for our earth, but more importantly, for our future.” The program started as a club where Omaha residents could drop off compost at more than 60 locations. It has since turned into a fully operational residential curbside service. Nicole Engels, a member of Hillside Solutions Compost Club, said the program benefits farmers directly. “Part of the importance of this program is that it does go directly to farms,” Engels said. “And with oil prices being higher, fertilizer prices are higher, this program will help to mitigate the cost of synthetic nitrogen sources, as well as helping to rebuild soil that has maybe been depleted over the years.” Hillside Solutions says composting can also help farmers offset the costs of rising fertilizer prices.
