A fruit tree. And, of course, some 'Okanagan' lettering. All these quintessentially valley and mountain motifs are on the new, multi-colour Okanagan Collection dog collars ($33) and leashes ($47) by Calgary-based Rocky Mountain Dog company. "We've really captured the Okanagan, representing the region with all that makes it famous, a major destination in Canada," said Rocky Mountain Dog founder Rob Johnson. "People that live in the Okanagan and have dogs will want these collars and leashes. But, also people that have visited the Okanagan and love it and want to take a piece of it home for their dog will want these collars and leashes, too." The Okanagan Collection is the latest in the Rocky Mountain Dog family, which also includes collar and leash designs based on other iconic regions and concepts from Banff, Canmore, Jasper, Yellowstone and the Kootenays to the Pacific Northwest, Range, Grizzly, Waterton, Fernie and Squamish. The Pacific Northwest Collection includes some motifs from Tofino and Whistler. The graphic artist for many of the other collections and the Okanagan Collection is Jean McAllister, who lives in the mountains near Canmore and has been collaborating with Rocky Mountain Dog for six years. Johnson, a former advertising agency and website concepts worker, launched Rocky Mountain Dog eight years ago to honour being outside with your dog, outfitted with good-looking and functional collars and leashes. The Okanagan alpine dog collar is tough but soft and comfortable and designed for everyday wear and outdoor adventure with the aforementioned motifs all over it. It's one inch in width and comes in four, adjustable neck circumference sizes: small, medium, large and extra-large. There's a strong but lightweight aluminum D-ring to attach a leash and a separate ID tag holder. The one-inch-wide Okanagan all-mountain dog leash is the company's signature, versatile leash that comes in two lengths: 6 feet and 8 feet. There's a sturdy clip to attach to the collar, a neoprene-cushioned handle, a bungee section to absorb sudden lurches, another clip to secure around your waist for hands-free walking and hiking, a quick-grab handle to bring your dog closer in traffic or other high-alert situations and an extra D-ring and barrel lock to attach poop bags, keys or small gear. Johnson hopes to get some Okanagan retailers on board soon.
