Cassie Jones, 22, of St. Peter the Fisherman Church in Mountain Home, knows that God works in unexpected ways, especially in her own life. The full-time registered nurse at Baxter Health and psychiatry doctoral student at UAMS grew up Southern Baptist and converted to Catholicism this spring with her husband. “I have a lot of Protestant pastors in my family,” she said. “Then (my husband and I) met some friends that were Catholic, and they helped bring us into the Church. I jokingly tell people — it’s true, though — I tried to prove the Catholic Church wrong. I studied for about a good six months to a year, and realized that I could not, in fact, prove it wrong, and so we started going to OCIA, and fell in love with the Church.” In her parish, Jones participates in the Walking With Purpose women’s Bible study. “Coming from a background where none of my living family members are Catholic, I really feel like I have such a deep sisterhood there,” she said. Jones is also a member of the Twin Lakes Chapter of the Nurse Honor Guard. “We’re all volunteer nurses, some of us retired, some of us currently working, but what we do is we provide sort of an honorary service at a nurse’s funeral. It’s kind of an extra moment to recognize the service of the nurses that have passed away in our community.” The obstacles throughout Jones’s life have helped her to serve out God’s plan. “I have a chronic pain condition; most of the women in my family have pretty severe autoimmune disorders. I had a lot of residual anxiety and panic, and struggles from dealing with that pain. God uses our suffering for his purpose, and I felt like it would make me a better nurse, having experienced that.” What brings you happiness? “As somebody who struggled with depression for most of my life, I try to find God in everything and beauty everywhere. Finding the little joys that he brings us, whether it be walking in the garden, whether it be taking an hour to go to adoration, just finding moments to recognize that he is here with me. I think we can sometimes have the temptation to say that mental health issues are one or the other, either fully spiritual issues or fully mental or physical issues, and I don’t think that’s true simply from my own experience. Becoming Catholic didn’t automatically heal all these issues that I’m going through, but it gave me the hope and the perseverance to work through them with patience.”
