"This partnership with UNC Charlotte represents an investment in the future of healthcare in our region," said Chris Bowe, senior vice president and president of Novant Health's Charlotte region, per Inside Charlotte. edu. "By equipping nursing students with leading-edge technology, we are helping prepare compassionate, highly skilled clinicians." These labs house 37 patient simulators. Each one mimics a different type of patient, per the university. Students run through procedures, test equipment, and learn technology before they step into real hospitals. "We can provide an immersive, experiential scenario for our nursing students," said Melinda Pierce, simulation and interdisciplinary practice coordinator and senior lecturer in the School of Nursing, according to WSOC-TV. The money will also pay for more teachers and staff to earn credentials in simulation-based teaching. Six out of 12 simulation instructors at the university hold this credential. Across the United States, fewer than 1,200 people have earned the Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator designation, per the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. North Carolina's Board of Nursing lets students complete half their required clinical hours in simulated settings instead of hospitals. The university's nursing simulation program earned the Healthcare Simulation Standards Endorsement from the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning. Half of School of Nursing graduates stay in Charlotte when they start working. The funds will also pay for teacher and staff health programs, covering mental health services and wellness activities. This partnership arrives as hospitals struggle to fill open positions. Researchers at UNC Chapel Hill project North Carolina will lack more than 12,000 registered nurses and over 5,000 licensed practical nurses by 2033. "Not only are we growing, we are also graying," said Dr. Sid Fletcher, senior vice president and president of employer solutions at Novant Health. "As you see folks in the community getting older, there is going to be more demand for healthcare services." Nursing homes and assisted living centers could face the worst staffing cuts.
