MANCELONA — D&D’s Concrete Garden LLC., located off US-131 near Mancelona, crafts concrete statues that draw the attention of passing motorists. The Northern Michigan business is owned and operated by Dennis Clark, who works in his shop daily alongside his family. The entire inventory originated from a single request by Dennis’ wife for a homemade birdbath. Dennis started crafting concrete items after buying a plastic form to fulfill his wife’s request. “My dear wife asked me, she goes, ‘can you make me a bird bath?’” Dennis said. He bought a plastic birdbath at Kmart to use as a mold for the concrete. After colleagues noticed his work, interest grew rapidly. “The guys at work saw it and it took off,” Dennis said. “Everybody wanted one. So I made bird baths at work and I made bird baths at the house to sell at the house.” As interest expanded, Dennis began selling patio stones and purchasing wholesale items to resell, including planters, angels and Dutch kids. He eventually determined that manufacturing the statues himself would be more cost-effective than buying from wholesalers. Dennis and his family now work in their shop daily to produce new pieces. “I pour two a day every day,” Dennis said. While he occasionally completes direct customer orders, most newly poured statues are placed directly in the yard for visitors to browse. The business features a catalog of approximately 3,000 different statue designs, though Dennis noted he cannot keep every design stocked simultaneously. “I can’t make them all,” Dennis said. “I don’t have enough time in the day.” Current top-selling items include concrete geese, mushrooms and gnomes, alongside fairies. The shop also crafts small Bigfoot statues, which quickly sell out. Through the growth of the shop, Dennis emphasized that the operation remains focused on his home life. “Everything I do, I do for us and my family,” Dennis said. For more information, click here.
